Dear Sir/Madam,Happy New Year!I am trying to simulated the fiber with NA 0.22. For this I have taken Core RI 1.49 and claculated the cladding RI for desired NA, it is coming 1.473. I have used the formula NA = sqrt(core_RI^2 - cladding_RI^2).I am using “cylindrical volume” to simulate the fiber in non-sequential mode. Is this the right approach to have a fiber with desired NA in Zemax? Doubting because…...When I changed the NA of fiber to 0.5(core RI 1.45 - cladding RI 1.3610), just to check wheater coupling efficiency is changing or not. I am getting same power at detector, placed at front surface of fiber! and hence same Coupling efficiency.I am attaching the zemax file of my Simulation for your reference.A comment would be appreciated.Thankyou.

Hi,I have created two Detector Rectangle objects to check the beam shape at different planes. I set them with different size and pixelization (one squared and one rectangular). However in the detector viewer i keep seeing a much bigger detector area, always with X and Y coordinates spanning from -90 to 90 for both the axis and detectors. Moreover none of them has that dimension. Why do i see such an effect?Thanks,Marco

I want to make optical multi lens design while using catalogue lenses only. I don’t want to use the Stock Lens Matching tool, because it is not flexible enough for my purposes.Is it possible to make optimization with merit operands using lenses restricted by a specific lens catalogue ?If not maybe by programming or creating a custom operand ?Thanks in advance

File names plus paths that are longer than 256 characters are not supported in Zemax. Since version 1607 of Windows 10 there has been an option to enable long paths through the registry; however, the application has to support it as well by being “longPathAware”.It appears that Zemax is not longPathAware but I wanted to check with the forums to see if others have run into this issue or if Zemax staff can confirm that this is the case. Of course, the simple solution is to not have such long paths.I run into this issue when generating reports that are saved with some of the meta data in the file name for easy legibility, searchability, etc. This leads to long file names. Additionally, I use a cloud service that stores the file relatively deep within the AppData folder which further lengthens the path name.

It randomly happens that zooming by scrolling gets stuck and does not work any more. It usually happens when coming back to the layout window from another window (being it an editor or an analysis tool). It never happens while working on the layout window itself.“Reset zoom” does what it is supposed to do, but still zooming by scrolling is disabled.A solution I found is to temporarily switch to Classic view and then switch back to Graph view.Is anyone facing my same problem?

HelloI want to simulate the effect of a quarter wave plate that creates an additional shift in the polarization of lets say 10° in a plarimeters. The polarimeter is comprised of a lens, collimating the polarized beam, a quarter wave plate, and an analyser plate. To determine the polarization state, the quarter wave plate is rotated azimutally by 180°. With the data I calculate the stokes parameter. It all works fine for the ideal case, but not for an added phase shift between both polarization states.I am using the Jones matrix for the exact quarter wave plate in the form of:A_real=1A_img=0D_real=0D_img=1the result for this quarter wave plate is as expected. The result is the same when I use, for testing purpose, the non-factored version Jones matrix of the quarter wave plate:A_real=0.707A_img=0.707D_real=0.707D_img=-0.707Now I add to the lambda/4 phase shift an additional shift of 10° in the Jone matrix, which results in the Jones matrix in Zemax notation:A_real=0.573576A_img=0.819152

Hello community, I wonder if there is a way to create a Merit Function to match your current optical design, in terms of spherical aberration, defocus, EFL, wavefront errors, etc. So instead of creating a MF to achieve certain optical quality, it is done backwards:you create a design and once you have it, you create a MF that will matches that optical quality everytime, even if you change some characteristics of your design (thicknes, glass, etc). Maybe I’m a bit loss with this, as it could be impossible, but any kind of help will be appreciated!

Hi, My coworker has a Ansys Zemax OpticStudio 2023 R1.03 version. I have a non-sequential archive file saved from a 2024 R2.01 version. My co worker cannot open my file in his version. Is it normal or did we do something wrong?Thanks for helping 

I’m trying to simulate a chrome-on-glass target in non-sequential mode by assigning a OD transmission coating to each dark face as shown in the image below.When I import the CAD as step file, all the surfaces above 50 are all assigned to face 0. It’s like there are only 50 faces allowed? Is there any way around this?I’ve tried importing with .igs with the same problem.Importing with .stl doesn’t include the individual faces.any suggestions or pointers?

When I select OPD Fan for a 5 degree field, I get this:These are the settings used. However, when I now select just 1 wavelength (same field, same system), I get something completely different in my “OPD Fan” values: The system is the exact same in both cases, and I confirm that the values change in the text version when selecting a single wavelength. Does this have to do with “lateral color” and how it is displayed in the OPD Fan plot (I expect my system to have lateral color for reference)? Or is it something else?Lateral Color (plot + in system diagram) for reference:System Information: I am modelling a GRIN (Gradient Refractive Index) lens design using a custom *.dll (nothing too fancy, just adds in wavelength dependence based on custom materials) extensions. This is a singlet that I was testing for off-axis light. Edit:Same effect happens if I switch x/y fields around:  Where OPD when selecting one wavelength doesn’t match the other.

Hi,I have the latest OpticStudio Pro version (2024, R2.01). I would like to see more significant digits in the lens data editor. Changing the value in teh preferences dialog box has no effect. Is that a bug or am I missing something?Thank you. 

Hi everybody,I have come across an impass in zemax. My problem statement says that I have three lenses separated by some distances. I have to move the distance between these lenses. The problem that is occurring is "distortion aberration" in the system. I've tried to  use some operand to reduce distortion by making the radius of curvature variables and now the distortion is absent in the system for a particular set of distances between the lenses. Now, when I am trying to move the lenses again, the distortion increases again. Pictures are attached for your reference. Hello, I have a file with CAD objects, Boolean Native objects, and a simple optical system.Every time I try to save an image of the NSC Shaded Model Window OpticStudio crashes.  I have tried to save as .bmp and .png which both make it crash.  .jpeg is the only format that will save the image without crashing.Is this a known issue or is there a setting making it crash?I tried to change hardware and software blending as well.Thank you.

Hi, I just had a micro-optic measured (outsourced) to obtain it’s true form.I got back a RoC, and 36 Zernike coefficients (Standard, Fringe and Annular).I’m trying to plug into Zemax - but I’m having a hard time understanding several things:Zemax still gives the Even Asphere terms - are they not described by the Zernikes? Would I need those terms measured separately? What number do I put in for the Norm Radius?Thanks, Eli

This should be pretty simple to do but I can’t figure it out.  In a .ZPL I am trying to set the value of the Tilt about Z for Coordinate Break surface #12.  It seems that this is PARAMETER 5. So I use the command:SETSURFACEPROPERTY  12, 5 123.456 nothing happens,  It is so simple in CodeV.CDE S12 123.456So archaic that Optic Studio uses “parameter number” instead of a simple keyword like ADE, BDE, CDE for tilt. CDE is tilt about Z axis (rotation) 

Hi to all!I have been trying to focus an extended source. In the context, I tried collimating it and then tried focusing it using a best form lens. Dear all I design an optical fiber (INF3: CORE refractive index = 1.489, CLADDING refractive index: 1.476 at wavelength 3.3 um) and displace a Cylinder Volume(the object #5) on slight air gap region(0.1 mm).I also try to set material of this object as Au. However, I cannot find the way to add absorption coefficient(‘k’ of ‘n + ik’) of material. In material catalog, I could only add real part of refractive index vs wavelength. Is it possible to set absorptive material in Zemax? (I already know how to use coating in absolute thickness. But I wonder if the cylinder is coated in radial direction, inside or outside)   Any other recommendations for absorptive material simulation are welcome !Thank you Optical FiberNSC Component Editor (object #5 is Au Cylinder) 

Hi All, I used .ZPL macro in ISET code. This code can be extracted the distortion,RI,CRA, and PSF. However, when I run the macro, multi-wavelengths are not extracted and psf is not extracted with the error message in the capture below. Could anyone debug these problem? thank you.

How do I optimize collimation based on physical optics propagation?I have a beam reducer consisting of stock lenses from Thor with the hope of reducing an input beam of D=4mm to D_out=0.5mm. I have run the optimization wizard already, based on “Angular Image quality” at the image surface, and the system looks good, and my beam is collimated. However the physical optics propagation has has by beam width at ~20mm.  Is there a way to  collimate based on physical optics propagation?  Thank you so much for any advice!
