Hello,  New user and first post here. I am trying to collimate a beam coming from a fiber with 0,26 NA, 4,5 nm and apodization of 1.0 in order to have a 6 mm diameter beam along the maximum possible distance (desired between 2-3 meters). I did it using lenses but now I want to try with an OAP from Thorlabs. This is the model used:  For achieving my goal I think I have to inverse the mirror so the image shown in the picture acts like my source, but I have tried with coordinate breaks and I can not manage to do it. Once I have done it I have to optimize the position of my source using those operands in order to achieve the desired width of the beam right? Thanks for your help

So far I haven't found a way to calculate many rays through to the image surface and read out the ray data on each surface.In ZPL, the "RAYTRACE hx, hy, px, py, wavelength" provides ray data on all surfaces (RAY*(surface)).Have I overlooked a solution using ZOS API?Many Thanks!Hans

In a Spot diagram plot, one can the see the position of the rays OR their direction - but how can we associate which position goes with which direction ?In other words, given the 2 following plots (spot diagram and spot diagram with cosine directions), how can we map a ray position to its direction :    

Please do me a favor. Zemax has the function "Image Simulation". I can do this interactively. Now, I want to use "Image Simulation" to simulate 2000 frame images. Therefore, I want to use SampZOS-API Matlab programming to automatically do it.  I have learned the code ZOS-API\Sample Code\MATLAB\MATLABStandalone_04_pull_data_from_FFTMTF.m" to acquire MTF curves. Would you please tell me how to program codes. The codes can realize to load, simulate and save 2000 frame images based on "Image Simulation" moduale. It would be appreciated if you could reply me as soon as possible.

Hi! I have a perfectly working sequential model in OpticStudio, where I use “Elliptical grating 1” to model a reflective grating. I am desperately trying to recreate this in a non-sequential model, but can’t seem to get it working.I am attempting to use the Binary 2A object. However, I only require one surface, not both sides, and the diffraction does not seem to be performing as expected. When I try to convert my sequential model to a non-sequential one using the Zemax wizard, it suggests a “Grid Sag Surface” and “Standard Surface” combined with a “Compound Lens”. However, this surface does not perform diffraction.I tried to import the surface as a STEP file, but I also cannot get this to perform diffraction either.Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Does anyone have an example (or is there one in the zemax documentation) for altering the number of zernike terms and the terms themselves using a python API?

I am trying to use the HYLD operand. When I type ‘hy’ into the merit function editor, HYLD comes up and I can enter it, but when I run/update the merit function it turns back to BLNK with comment “was HYLD”. In the optimization wizard under Optimization Goal, it wont let me select “Improve Manufacturing Yield” and the section bubble is grayed out. I am running a professional version of Zemax 22.2. Are these options just not available on my version? Or is there something I have to do to enable it?

Hello. I am trying to get the vertex position of each optical element in terms of global coordinates. I have found I need this as I am trying to find the full X, Y, Z location for each ray when running a “CreateNormUnpol” raytrace. When I am reading the ray information, I only get values for the X & Y locations and a 0.0 value for the Z location of the ray. Is there a way to enable global position for all axes? In a similar analysis, I want to know if there is a way to run a single ray trace and get all the location and angle information at each surface as is done in the Single Ray Trace window under the Analysis tab?

I am having an issue with the example Matlab scripts in OpticStudio. They fail to connect to OpticStudio. Here, for example is the portion of the Matlab function that connects, InitConnection FunctionIf I uncomment the success variable to define a “custom” path to OpticStudio, then the function will work; however,  the line,success = ZOSAPI_NetHelper.ZOSAPI_Initializer.Initialize();assigns 0 to success.I am curious as to why this is happening? I am running Zemax OpticStudio 2024 2.01. My installation folder for the program isC:\Program Files\Ansys Zemax OpticStudio 2024 R1.00\You can see the difference between the release number and the version that I’m running. I installed the program using the Ansys downloader.

In NSC mode, in Analyse/Polarization tab/Coatings/**any** vs. Wavelength : can you confirm that the range of accessible wavelength is determined by the min/max wavelength defined in the system explorer ?Because with only a wavelength at 10µm, only data at 10µm is displayed on the Reflection/Transmission/etc graphs, even after modifiying the “Minimum Wave”/”Maximum Wave” in the settings of the graph.The doc mentions (Reflection vs. Wavelength (coatings, polarization group)):“Min Wave The minimum wavelength to plot. This defines the left edge of the plot.Max Wave The maximum wavelength to plot. This defines the right edge of the plot.“but does not precise that those values must be within the system explorer wavelength range.

In terms of physical thickness, when a coating is applied on a face of say a rectangular volume, does it change the actual thickness of the rectangular volume ? or is the coating’s thickness is assimilated to 0 in terms of direction/propagation of rays ?in other words, do coatings only modify the amplitude/energy of rays, or also their locations/directions (like a regular parallel plate for example that also shifts the oblique rays) ?

Hi,I’m trying to extract data of Huygens PSF in Matlab through the API.I want to get the center coordinates and I thought the HeaderData will include it. But looks like the HeaderData is empty. PSF_Results = PSF_Win.GetResults();string(PSF_Results.HeaderData.Lines) ans =   1×0 empty string array The MetaData and the DataGrids seems to work fine and contains the data.Am I missing something? Is there other place that I can pull the coordinates from there? Thanks!

 Hello Zemax community, I have a source (ZBF) file which is Gaussian-like in one axis and Lorentzian-like in the other. In addition to the ZBF file, I also have the x and y cross-section far-field angular distribution of power (something like a representative goniometric scan in both axes). Source near-field: Source far-field:​I am re-imaging the source through an optimized lens pair, with the goal of understanding the resulting image plane characteristics - primarily understanding if/how diffraction effects through the lens pair might result in an enlarged / rounded spot. Initially, I thought POP would be suitable, but the NA of the source seems to be too large, so I am looking for another way to accurately characterize the resulting image. Looking for some advice on a good alternative approach. - Partially coherent image analysis starting with the ZBF as object? - Ray optics / Huygens PSF? Is there a way to mimic the Lorentzian-like profile in one axis only for the apodization factor

Hi everyone,I am trying to design a 5x Continuous zoom system from scratch. I have tried making paraxial optics with 5x magnification with 4 paraxial lens groups but I am not getting the results (I got focal length of each group from paraxial optics then I tried to design each group separately). 

Type codes for modifysettings are listed in the Zemax help files under: The Programming Tab > About the ZPL > KEYWORDS (about the zpl) > MODIFYSETTINGS (keywords) However, Geometric MTF is not listed here. My question is: what are the type codes for the geometric MTF analysis window?In case these do not exist, how would I go about modifying the settings for the geometric MTF analysis window via ZOSAPI?

Hi,I tried to evaluate astigmatism of curved tilted mirror in sequential mode. Astigmatism is obvious, but Seidel coefficients are zero. Also in Merit Function Editor parameter “ASTI” returns zero. Maybe the reason is that Seidel coefficients ignore the coordinate breaks for tilting.Did not find any topic describing this fact.Does anyone have a solution for getting Astigmatism of focusing system with tilted objects?

I want to fix the zoom, pan, and orientation of the geometry in my NSC shaded model, so when I update the position of one of the objects, it doesn’t change back to the default layout.  Is there a way to do this?  

I am running a POP analysis of a system that has a zernike standard phase surface. I am trying to add defocus using this surface and observe it in the POP phase output. I am able to see small magnitudes of defocus but once I try to add 10 waves or more the POP output does not appear to reflect the added defocus. Is this a sampling issue or something else? 0 waves of defocus1 wave of defocus5 waves of defocus10 waves of defocus 

The zemax part designer has a ‘Expose Point’ that allows the sketch point to be directly modified and optimized from the non-sequential component editor. I’d like to do the same with the angle in a ‘ROATE’ command in the script. Is that possible? Or is the another approach that I should use?Thanks in advance for any help,John 

Hi, I have been tring to reproduce the phase produce by the Zernike standard phase, and I believe there is an issue with the terms 7 and 8, corresponding with vertical and horizontal coma. Theoretically they should be Z7=sqrt(8)*(3*ro.^3-2*ro).*sin(phi);Z8=sqrt(8).*(3*(ro.^3)-2*ro).*cos(phi); However, after a lot of headache I realized that they behave like:Z7=sqrt(8)*(3*ro.^3).*sin(phi);Z8=sqrt(8).*(3*(ro.^3)).*cos(phi); Ithought maybe it a different stardard, but in the original paper referred R. Noll, "Zernike polynomials and atmospheric turbulence", J. Opt. Soc. Am., Vol. 66, No. 3, p207 (1976)The definition is sqrt(8)*(3*ro.^3-2*ro).*sin(phi). It is pretty obvious noticing that radially is just a cubic term without the linear term when you represent the wavefront map. It does like the 7th (or 8th) order zernike represented in many places. This is very surprising. I need to read out the X half width and Y half width of a Detector Rectangle. The above code used to work but now it says no AttributeError: 'IObject' object has no attribute 'XHalfWidth'. Could you tell me a way to circumvent this problem. 

Hi zemaxers, I am trying to do a prism surface accuracy simulation in non-sequential mode as illustration below.I used a compound lens to create the prism, but found that it just combine two surfaces as a rectangle object.  it seems the compound lens ignore the tilt parameter in the surface.my questionhow to set the surface tilt in  the compound lens? except the compound lens method, is there any other way to do a surface accuracy effects in non-sequential mode? Thanks Yang   

Hello,I am designing some systems using cylindrical lenses and I am exploring the possibility of using freeform lenses, but I don’t have a lot of experience on this. I know there are some surfaces for this available in OpticStudio, but which one can be best used for cylindrical freeform lenses, such that there is only optical power in one direction?Also, what is generally a good way for such a design? First optimize a standard system and from there introduce some freeform variables? Or directly go to the freeform variables?Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone,I am attempting to create a homogeneous, squared light source using a rectangular array in non-sequential mode. Despite setting the following parameters:Layout Rays = Analysis Rays = 1 Number of X and Y = 13 Spacing in X and Y = 1I am unable to achieve the desired result: a simple 13x13 array of equally spaced rays. Hi, I am using Non-Sequential mode in OpticStudio, and I am trying to create a square source from a rectangular array. The problem is that the source only traces rays to a single quadrant of the optical system. I would like to create a square source without having to create four separate sources in each quadrant.
