Simulating Integrating Spheres

I have a question about simulating integrating spheres. There are 2 configurations:Integrating sphere attached to monochromator with QTH light bulb where only the output light from the integrating sphere is of interest, how it comes out from an X inch diameter sphere with Y inch port aperture. It doesn’t matter how the light gets into the integrating sphere, as long as the output light is uniform. The goal is to use the output light in further simulations such as what the light pattern would be after light passes through pin holes and such. An LED light source with filter wheel is attached to integrating sphere, it is important to calculate system efficiency so input light needs to be tracked as well as output light. The goal is to better approximate system efficiency by accounting for light that goes in and out (desired output as well as the input port where LEDs are) of the integrating sphere before it escapes or is absorbed.Does anyone have recommendations or examples in non-sequent

Trouble with galvanometer at large angles

Hi all,I have a scanning mirror like a galvo mirror in sequential mode. When I rotate it more than 45 degree to scan some angles, instead of having a reflection, the beam passes through the mirror. what is the reason behind this and how can I scan larger angles?thanks,

Tolerance analysis knowhow bases on Energy

Dear All.I wonder if it is possible to analyze the amount of incident energy according to tolerance through Criterion's 'Merit Function' or 'User Script' in the SC rather than the NSC during tolerance analysis. (I want using Monte Carlo Simulation)Energy is important because the amount of incident light determines the performance of the optical system.Energy change due to AR coating repeatability is considered separately.Thank you in advance.

How can I get the OPDC through Raytracing without calling the OPDC function of ZEMAX?

I want to understand how the OPDC built-in function in ZEMAX is calculated, and I hope to reproduce the OPDC calculation through ray tracing and programming or other methods.The focus of the question is the specific operation method. Calculation of the EXPD operand

Dear OpticStudio community,I was wondering whether anybody could comment on the following context.I’m using a microscope objective model with an NA of 0.95 in air, where the high NA side is located in the object space. The aperture type in the software is defined as object-side NA. Also, ray aiming (real) is on to equidistantly sample the aperture stop.I’m interested in the diameter of the exit pupil (ExP), because there I want to extract the optical path difference relative to the chief ray with rays that equidistantly sample the exit pupil. For this purpose, I have to remap the rays in the aperture stop so that the condition to sample equidistantly the ExP is fulfilled.Here I run over the fact that the 2x paraxial ray height at the ExP plane from the merit function editor does not match the operand EXPD.So my question is how does the software calculate the EXPD operand and why I might get that differenceThank you very much in advance.Alex

Turning mirror in NSC

Hi everybody,i  put an turning mirror (==like fold mirror in SC) in my optical system in NSC. I realized this with rectangle object ant mirror material under 225° tilt about x. But the following optical parts( 2x lenses) after turning mirror now are off axis and parallel to turning mirror. I corrected that again with 45° tilt of next following lens. Only problem is now, that all optical parts after turning mirror are all off axis. Is there any option like fold mirror (in SC) in NSC?thank you in advance.

Modelling an ellipsoidal volume in non-sequential mode

Hello,I just tried to create an ellipsoidal object in the non-sequential mode. I’m using OpticStudio 18.4.1. The only way I found is to use a FreeformZ object. Isn’t there a more straight forward solution? Like the toroidal or rectangle volumes.Thanks in advance and with best regards,Martin Jahn

Results for high frequency approximations (Wave propagation)

Hello,I am a new user of the OpticStudio software which arouses my curiosity!The wave propagation can be solved with several models and the software offers several possibilities. The model based on the astigmatic Gaussian beams (beamlets) is very well interesting.But, I found few years ago the relevant paper:Gosse L., James F., Convergence results for an inhomogeneous system arising in various high frequency approximations, Numer. Math. 90: 721–753 (2002).It is enough hard because the mathematics formulations are theoretic. However, the issue solving gives several possibilities to find the phase and the amplitude of the light wave together.Numerical values for the phase and the amplitude of the smooth wedge.Therefore, do we have this possibility with the OpticStudio? Compute the phase in order to see transparency images for instance?Thank you in advance for your answer.Benoît.

PSF broadening and beam width estimation

Hi, I am looking at a pint source, star, with a telescope system and I would like to understand how much my PSF broadened and what is the size of the observed point source on my detector. I am not sure what is the best approach to do this, as I get different results trying different type of methods for analysis. Method1: paraxial gaussian data. I set the input waist same as aperture value, as the input beam in collimated. Final value is 8.8mm beam size and beam waist of 5.5e-4mm. Looking at the PSF plot I donot see the 8.6mm. looking at the geometrical enclosed energy at above 85% energy, it is above 70um which does not go together with the beam size or beam waist estimated by paraxial beam. Method2: Hygens PSF or FFT PSF cross section. They are much lower and not sure if they give a correct estimate when my system is not diffraction-limited. Method3: Physical Optics propagationI defined the beam as top hat with beam waist of aperture diameter for collimated entrance beam.Beam size and

Troubles when using grid sags in OpticStudio

Hi,I encounter problems when using grid sags in my optical model. The software become really slow when I try to import a specified grid sag to modelize a mirror.The importation takes more than a minute, even with a small-sized sag file (64x64).Even after the sucessful importation, all modules I would use in the software are very slow to compute (shaded model, wavefront, surface sag,..), but I see that the sag is correctly taken into account when I wait for the corresponding mirror sag to be computed, meaning that the .dat file is correctly implemented.Does someone know the reason why the use of such a grid sag makes the software so slow? Have you got some tips that could help me to accelerate the data processing?I joined to this question an example of the 64x64 grid sag I mentionned above.Thank you for your answers.Pierre

Laser focal spot size vs Airy disk

I don’t know if this is the right place, but there are probably people here with a lot of experience that may answer this.I’m trying to model a laser system, where I want to know the focal spot size of the laser.For this there is a standard, generally used formula: (M² * focal length * wavelength) / (pi * aperture). For parameters 980nm wavelength, 330mm focal length and aperture 20mm, this gives 20,6µm.For the Airy disk radius, the formula is (1.22 * wavelength * F/#). For the same parameters, this gives 19,73µm, which is also what I get from Zemax. This means the Airy diameter is 39,46µm, which is about twice the size of the focal spot size calculated with the generally used formula to calculate the focal spot size.So I am wondering what is the difference here?

How to analyse irradiance versus total power in geometrical image analysis

Hi,In my spectrometer design, I want to understand how much percentage of incoming power will be detected at each wavelength and if that is above sensitivity of my detector. I have used the geometrical image analysis for that. However, I cannot make sense of the numbers here.If the total power through the entrance pupil is 9e-15 over the 3mm width of the detector (which covers 250nm to 350nm wavelength) with 231pixels in each axis (sice the detector pixel size is 13um), I donot understand how come the irradiance power at each wavelength is higher than the total power! I assume image width is only in the width in x-axis or y-axis. let me know if that is also not a correct assumption.   I  set the total power to 1(equivalent to 100%), to have the outcome of the irradiance in fraction of Watts/mm^2, but I have the same issue.  Secondly, I would like to know when my detetcor is not along global Y-axis, looking at the Cross Y is correct. Meaning is the Cross X and Cross Y in the image analy

Scattering from particulate contaminants

Hi, All surfaces have some amount of particulate contamination (i.e., dust) that increases their BSDF above the level predicted by their surface roughness. It happened in a clean room when we are aligning a optical system.I would like to simulate this scattering using a MIE model, for that I need to give mie properties to each optical surfaces (mirrors in our system).is possible to give mie properties to each mirror and evaluate particulate contamination?Best regardsMiguel

POWF and POWP calculation,

It seems to me that when Zemax calculate POWF or POWP, it doesn’t take into account of wavelength. Is that the case? The POWF or POWP should be varied with the wavelength, I tried to see it in the merit function editor and using ZPL programming, both of them gives me the same results. Measuring distance between surface while changing decenter

Hi all,I’m new to Zemax, and I’m struggling on finding the exact distance between surfaces. I understand that normally the distance between surfaces depends on the thickness that has been set in the lens data editor. However, in the off-axis system I’m designing at current moment, I found that applying Decenter Y will change the distance between surfaces. Now, I’m using the measurement tool to find the distance between surfaces after applying decenter Y. Is there any other method to tell me the accurate distance between surfaces? Thanks in all in advance. Daoming

Donut Shaping and Propagatinga Gaussian Beam with POP

Dear all,I am Trying to generate and propagate a Donut beam using axicons. My problem is thaht when I use the POP tool the beam “disappears” after the first axicon surface, Namely before the axicon I see the gauss which propagates, after the axicon I see only a blue field with a red pixel in the middle. how to realize "image simulation" by ZOS-API Matlab programming

Please do me a favor. Zemax has the function "Image Simulation". I can do this interactively. Now, I want to use "Image Simulation" to simulate 2000 frame images. Therefore, I want to use SampZOS-API Matlab programming to automatically do it.  I have learned the code ZOS-API\Sample Code\MATLAB\MATLABStandalone_04_pull_data_from_FFTMTF.m" to acquire MTF curves. Would you please tell me how to program codes. The codes can realize to load, simulate and save 2000 frame images based on "Image Simulation" moduale. It would be appreciated if you could reply me as soon as possible.

How to calculate diffraction with a CAD model?

I am trying to simulate light incident on a semiconductor sample underneath an AFM tip. The AFM tip has micron-scale dimensions, so diffraction will occur. I have created a CAD model of the AFM tip in Solidworks and imported it into Zemax as an STL file. I am not sure how to set up my Zemax project to calculate diffraction around the AFM tip. I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.The CAD model and Zemax project are attached here. Thank you!

Define transmission in material data

Hi all,I need to define the transmittance of a material and I have as input the emission of the source in terms of CIE 1931 x, y and as output the measurement with the same standard.Inserted the values in the Source Spectrum Plot of OS, I obtained the spectrum for 100 wavelengths of both the source and the target.How can I combine the weight of each wavelength to generate the absorption values to be included in the material catalog?I attach the Excel file used for the calculation. Thanks in advance.

Merit function weigth definition and optimization issue

Hi, I would like to understand better how to define the weigths for the merit functions. I usually put 100 for things care more, or 10 for the things needs to be closer to certain value and 1 for values that needs to be further away. Can I ask to get help in understanding how to define weigths for the parameters and what is the maximum.I have following issues, which I would like some help regarding it:Optimizing for GPBS will increase the rms spot size drastically, not sure why and what to prefer?FICL: Why increasing the Sampling will change the value?  Shouldn’t the value converge?Cannot run the hammer optimizer using local merit function due to Insufficient sampling. y-real definition and spectrograph resolution

Hi, I am in doubt how to understand y-real and also Cross-y in image analysis of the tilted system.I have used a code to generate spectrometer resolution for the tilted detector like below:In the ZPL code I used “yf = RAYY(Last_surf)” for determining my y position. However I am not sure I understand if RAYY is the correct one to use to show the position of the beam on the image plane and calculate the resolution or I need to multiply that by the cos(angle).Also, I am trying to use the geometrical image analysis for looking at the beams in different wavelength to see how resolvable they are by choosing 5nm resolution and how wide the beams are. I would like to know if that is the way to go. In this case I also used Cross y and I am in doubt what is the coordinate and if this is along the image plane.  Thank you in advance,Fatemeh
