Measuring distance between surface while changing decenter

Hi all,I’m new to Zemax, and I’m struggling on finding the exact distance between surfaces. I understand that normally the distance between surfaces depends on the thickness that has been set in the lens data editor. However, in the off-axis system I’m designing at current moment, I found that applying Decenter Y will change the distance between surfaces. Now, I’m using the measurement tool to find the distance between surfaces after applying decenter Y. Is there any other method to tell me the accurate distance between surfaces? Thanks in all in advance. Daoming

Donut Shaping and Propagatinga Gaussian Beam with POP

Dear all,I am Trying to generate and propagate a Donut beam using axicons. My problem is thaht when I use the POP tool the beam “disappears” after the first axicon surface, Namely before the axicon I see the gauss which propagates, after the axicon I see only a blue field with a red pixel in the middle. Noone as Idea what is gong wrong and haow to fix the problem to see the beam evolving during its propagation?I attach the file to give you the possibility to have a look.Best regardsGabriele

how to realize "image simulation" by ZOS-API Matlab programming

Please do me a favor. Zemax has the function "Image Simulation". I can do this interactively. Now, I want to use "Image Simulation" to simulate 2000 frame images. Therefore, I want to use SampZOS-API Matlab programming to automatically do it.  I have learned the code ZOS-API\Sample Code\MATLAB\MATLABStandalone_04_pull_data_from_FFTMTF.m" to acquire MTF curves. Would you please tell me how to program codes. The codes can realize to load, simulate and save 2000 frame images based on "Image Simulation" moduale. It would be appreciated if you could reply me as soon as possible.

How to calculate diffraction with a CAD model?

I am trying to simulate light incident on a semiconductor sample underneath an AFM tip. The AFM tip has micron-scale dimensions, so diffraction will occur. I have created a CAD model of the AFM tip in Solidworks and imported it into Zemax as an STL file. I am not sure how to set up my Zemax project to calculate diffraction around the AFM tip. I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.The CAD model and Zemax project are attached here. Thank you!

Define transmission in material data

Hi all,I need to define the transmittance of a material and I have as input the emission of the source in terms of CIE 1931 x, y and as output the measurement with the same standard.Inserted the values in the Source Spectrum Plot of OS, I obtained the spectrum for 100 wavelengths of both the source and the target.How can I combine the weight of each wavelength to generate the absorption values to be included in the material catalog?I attach the Excel file used for the calculation. Thanks in advance.

Merit function weigth definition and optimization issue

Hi, I would like to understand better how to define the weigths for the merit functions. I usually put 100 for things care more, or 10 for the things needs to be closer to certain value and 1 for values that needs to be further away. Can I ask to get help in understanding how to define weigths for the parameters and what is the maximum.I have following issues, which I would like some help regarding it:Optimizing for GPBS will increase the rms spot size drastically, not sure why and what to prefer?FICL: Why increasing the Sampling will change the value?  Shouldn’t the value converge?Cannot run the hammer optimizer using local merit function due to Insufficient sampling. y-real definition and spectrograph resolution

Hi, I am in doubt how to understand y-real and also Cross-y in image analysis of the tilted system.I have used a code to generate spectrometer resolution for the tilted detector like below:In the ZPL code I used “yf = RAYY(Last_surf)” for determining my y position. However I am not sure I understand if RAYY is the correct one to use to show the position of the beam on the image plane and calculate the resolution or I need to multiply that by the cos(angle).Also, I am trying to use the geometrical image analysis for looking at the beams in different wavelength to see how resolvable they are by choosing 5nm resolution and how wide the beams are. I would like to know if that is the way to go. In this case I also used Cross y and I am in doubt what is the coordinate and if this is along the image plane.  Thank you in advance,Fatemeh

To find optimum number for smoothing in detector viewer

Hello, I understand that irradiance in NSC simulation result and in the real world has a gap because real world has infinite number of rays and simulation uses limited number of rays.So, I usually use maximum number for smoothing to make the gap small.But I also think that smoothing(averaging) could lose accuracy.Hence, I think I need to balance out between “smoothing” and accuracy of result, based on number of rays in a detector.If the detector has enough number of rays, smoothing may not be necessary.For instance, every pixels in a detector has a ray, smoothing may not be necessary to get the result for the smallest gap to the real world.Understanding those, I am wondering if there is a criteria or a guidance for getting an optimum number of smoothing.Does anybody know that? RegardsKazu

Microlens Array in Sequential Mode

Hi,I’m trying to model lens array imaging using mixed mode (array defined in NSC).My question is, how valid is the Image Analysis for such a setup? The on-axis field component appears to shape a proper image, but from the layout rays I have a hard time imaging how an actual image is formed (see below picture). When using the off-axis field to make the Image Simulation, the picture appears to have multiple overlays (4). Second question (perhaps the reason behind my misunderstanding), is how can Microlens Arrays be used to form images. I would think that placing the object and image plane 2f before and after the array would give a 1:1 imaging of the object (f being the single lens focal length). Additionally, I’m guessing some kind of post-processing of the image is necessary to actually make the image resolvable? Simulation file is attached.Best regards,Ahmed

Simulating spot size away from a focus

I’m working on a system in sequential mode where a beam is launched from a multimode fiber (0.12 NA) goes through some lenses, and is focused on an image plane (see my other post on the topic). I had previously asked about how to evaluate the size of the focus after the beam.  The suggestion was to put a field point originating from the edge of the fiber (in addition to one launching from the middle of the fiber) and to look at where it lands after the lens - that worked well for that purpose.Now I would like to know how to evaluate the spot size at a location where the beam is not focused. Using the field height doesn’t work since the rays from all the fields are spread out and partially overlapped. So how would you do this?  Is it just a matter of looking at the locations of the marginal rays or is there a better way?Thanks!

What are the parameters I have to use to optimize the Fresnel lens in Non-sequential mode?

Hello all,To design the real Fresnel lens one needs to use “Fresnel 1” in Non-sequential mode. But I have no idea on how to calculate the following parameters for Fresnel 1 a)Pitchb)Radiusc)coeff r^2, Coeffr^4 and so on. I calculated these parameters easily in sequential mode. But in Non-sequential mode I dont know which parameter in optimization tab controls it. The below image is for reference. Does anybody know how to calculate it?

How to see the phase of optical systems

As I already searched, in OpticStudio has at least 3 ways to express the phase, 1st is shown in the type of Huygens PSF, 2nd is shown in the type of FFT PSF, 3rd is shown in Beam File Viewer.  But I am not clear what are the differences among them. I also compare the figures among them, they looks different. So I ask the question here, maybe someone can answer me. Thanks in advance!

Rounded tip axicon modelling (continued)

Hi all, I hope everyone is still doing well. Following on from my last post (see “Related topics”) I have been trying to model an imperfect axicon tip for a 20 degree axicon from Thorlabs (AX2520-B). I have been using the standard surface within the lens data editor to do so.From the instructions within the help function for the standard surface, I have calculated the conic term to be -8.54 and have estimated the radius of the tip curvature to be approximately 30 micron (as the help function states that this value is not too important as long as it is significantly smaller than the total aperture of the lens, which it is in this case).Having placed surfaces at every 0.1 mm from the (now imperfect) conical tip across its approximately 7.5 mm Bessel zone length for the 2.6 mm 1/e^2 input beam diameter (giving a total of 82 surfaces in the attached files), I only observe miniscule oscillations in the peak irradiance on axis, contrary to my experimental observations (as well as that from v

Metalens Hybrid simulation

 Hi，I want to simulate the performance improvement after inserting a metalens in camera lens, similar to the result publish in Nano letters (DOI: 10.1021/acs.nanolett.8b03567).Nano letters paper figure 5, using zemax to simulate metacorrector with microscope objective supporting information for Nano letters paper, using zemax “grid phase” to calculate the focal length shift and focal spot frofile I want to calculate the focal length shift, focal spot frofile and wavefront aberration function just like this paper. In my case, the grid phase data was generated using matlab and imported to zemax. The wavefront result was improved, but other results seems unchanged. The physical optics propagation result barely changed, I am not sure about the calculation result. original and final wavefrontoriginal and final POPoriginal and final PSF

How to find out the coefficient r^2, r^4 and r^6?

Hello everyone,I am doing sunlight collection using Fresnel lens. For that purpose i have purchased Fresnel lens from Edmund optics which has the following spec 5" x 5", 4" Focal Length, Fresnel LensAspherically Contoured Fresnel LensesStock #46-614But for the above lens Edmund optics does not provide Zemax file. To design the above mentioned lens in opticstudio either i have to use “Fresnel” surface in sequential mode or “Fresnel 2” in non sequential mode. I supposed to work in non sequential mode. If I know how to design in sequential mode then I can convert the design into non sequential mode. But I am stuck at one point of designing Fresnel lens in sequential mode. The point where I am stuck is in determining the 2nd order, 4th order, and 6th order term in Fresnel lens.I know rest of the things to design Fresnel surface in sequential mode. Can anyone help me with this issue?

Modelling intrinsic aberrations of off-axis parabolic mirrors

Dear OpticStudio community,I want to model an off-axis parabolic mirror in sequential mode, which focuses a parallel beam. According to this paper:https://www.osapublishing.org/ao/abstract.cfm?uri=ao-37-16-3539there should be some intrinsic coma and astigmatism even for on-axis beams, when an off-axis mirror is used, These terms disapear for the symmetric on-axis case. However, when I model an on axis system in ZOS, I do not see any aberrations in the spot diagram or the OPD plots. Any advice on this? Thanks!

Should I keep using POP method to simulate a image system if the ZBF.file (light source) is not similar to the Gaussian beam??

 Hi everyone,I have Lumerical and Zemax license to run the different scales of simulation.However, I want to do the Zemax propagation after I collect my electromagnetic field data in Lumerical.I use the Zemax interoperability to transfer my electromagnetic field (Lumerical) into ZBF file and use it as the light source in Zemax.(https://support.lumerical.com/hc/en-us/articles/360034936793-Zemax-interoperability-overview)In order to see the interference phenomenon and the focus spot in Zemax, I used POP method with a simple Lens setup.The results were not well. Please tell me how do I adjust my Zemax simulation if I have ZBF file which is not like gaussian beam. Mant thanks,Simon Wang

internal reeflections in solid CAD file

I import a CAD assembly SolidWorks and explode it(SAB format) but when do the ray tracing and make the opacity of the CAD files to lower , I set all faces of the CAD files to the mirror and after ray tracing I see that rays are reflected internally inside the CAD file. like it is a shell and not a solid!! but it is solid. how can I solve this issue?
