ZOS-API Example does not work as expected

In the example 17 from the ZOS-API doc, the number or analsyis and layout rays are changed:#! How to explain the location of the object principal plane in a thick plano-convex lens

From reading this interesting discussion below.I went down a rabbit hole when I was figuring out where the object principal plane of a thick plano-convex lens is. I’ve been taught to find the principal planes like its described at RP Photonics, that is:extrapolate the ingoing and outgoing rays such that they meet in a planeHowever, when rays parallel to the optical axis enter through the plane face of the lens, the ingoing and outgoing rays will meet exactly along the convex face, which is not a plane.Therefore, I believe the principal plane is defined as the plane coincident with the convex surface vertex. At least, this is what I’ve taken away when I used OpticStudio (surface 1 is the convex surface).I also found this information here:Plano-convex and plano-concave lenses have one principal plane that intersects the optical axis, at the edge of the curved surface, and the other plane buried inside the glass.I can accept this definition, but I was curious, from a teaching perspective,

NS Optimisation with constraint

Hi, I am trying to optimise the detector distance for maximum flux in a simple collimation setup made of one LED and 2 lenses. I want to set constraints for the detector location as for it to not travel before the lenses. I do not manage to optimise with the following Merit function and not sure what I am doing wrong.Any help would be appreciated.

Difference between the diameter in the spot size equation and the diameter on Zemax

A CO2 laser beam (10.6 μm) with a diameter of 2.5 mm was focused with a ZnSe lens with a focal length of 200 mm. When using the Quick Focus function on Zemax, the spot size is about 500 nm. When using the spot size calculation equation, it is 1.3 mm. The difference is too big. Is it possible to interpret the spot size on Zemax similarly to the spot size in the equation?

Annulus/cylinder2 pipe absorbing property does not work

Hi, I am trying to use an anulus and a cylinder 2 pipe to form a lens aperture stop, I set both to ABSORB at the material taps. But there are still a lot of rays pass through. I close the anulus or open the anulus, the intensity on the detector is the same. Looks like they are still transparent. Could you tell me how to fix this. Thanks so much

HYLD operand not available

I am trying to use the HYLD operand. When I type ‘hy’ into the merit function editor, HYLD comes up and I can enter it, but when I run/update the merit function it turns back to BLNK with comment “was HYLD”. In the optimization wizard under Optimization Goal, it wont let me select “Improve Manufacturing Yield” and the section bubble is grayed out. I am running a professional version of Zemax 22.2. Are these options just not available on my version? Or is there something I have to do to enable it?

ZOS-API - Non sequential mode - Surface normal information

Hi there again friends from the Zemax community, I want to use the ZOS-API interface to run a non sequential ray tracing analysis. I have managed to run a batch ray tracing analysis using OpenBatchRayTrace() and CreateNormUnpol(), however, as far as I understand it, these two tools work just for a sequential system.I found that for the non-sequential case, I would need to use a different approach. I found the following guide on how to run the non-sequential case:  However, it seems that in this case I would need to first execute the non-sequential ray-tracing, save the results into a file and then extract the data associated to the rays with a ZRDReader object. Having said this, I have a few questions:-From the data available to the ZRDReader I notice that there is no information on the surface normals as in the sequential sequential batch ray tracing case. Is it possible to obtain the surface normals in this case? Or should I try to determine these directly from the incident and trans

Any way for the Zernike Fringe/Standard Coefficients tab to display names of what each polynomial is?

Here is what the Zernike breakdown looks like (fringe coefficients) Is there any sort of feature, extension, etc to display the colloquial name of each polynomial alongside?   Ex - display Y tilt alongside p*sin(A) Saves me from flipping back and fourth especially for the higher order polynomials.

Direction cosines expressed in global coordinate system

Hello there friends from the Zemax community, I am trying to use the ZOS-API to perform some ray tracing calculations via python.In general I have a basic working system and my question is specifically related to how can I express the obtained direction cosines at a given surface in terms of the global coordinate system.First at all, I do:             normUnpol = raytr.CreateNormUnpol(maxrays, ZOSAPI.Tools.RayTrace.RaysType.Real, surf)Here, I am trying to get all relevant information for the rays traces until the surface surf right? Calculating average of sagittal and tangential MTF

I want to calculate the average of sagittal and tangential MTF as it is much realistic. How to do that? This is coming from a bifocal phase map. One way to do this is possibly vary defocus and calculate the PSF and, from there, through focus MTF. But I only put a 0 D and 3D to the phase map. So, pl help to calculate the average Through focus MTF vs focal shift at a particular special frequency of 50 cycles per mm. Thank you.

"Twisted" Object or Surface in Zemax

Hi to all gurus,I wanted to create a twisted mirror surface but wonder which surface type or object type supporting this. My initial thought was using a free form surface but then I am not familiar with free form and don’t know how to control the twisting angle. Equivalency between coating definitions

Various possibilities are available to define coatings - listed from simplest to most complex:the “I.X” notation: where X represents the transmitted intensity, irespective of angle/wavelength/polarization. Zemax magnetic capabilities

I was wondering if Zemax handles magnetic properties somehow (may it be permeability ?) Or do all computations assume non-magnetic media ? Same question but regarding conducitivity?  In both case, I could not find anywhere in the doc something that states that Zemax only natively works with non-magnetic/non-conducting media

Wavelength range in Coating's Reflection vs Wavelength

In NSC mode, in Analyse/Polarization tab/Coatings/**any** vs. Wavelength : can you confirm that the range of accessible wavelength is determined by the min/max wavelength defined in the system explorer ?Because with only a wavelength at 10µm, only data at 10µm is displayed on the Reflection/Transmission/etc graphs, even after modifiying the “Minimum Wave”/”Maximum Wave” in the settings of the graph.The doc mentions (Reflection vs. Wavelength (coatings, polarization group)):“Min Wave The minimum wavelength to plot. This defines the left edge of the plot.Max Wave The maximum wavelength to plot. This defines the right edge of the plot.“but does not precise that those values must be within the system explorer wavelength range.

Flipping of phase data

I am creating .dat file in MATLAB for vertical coma, but after importing in Zemax as a grid phase, I can see in surface sag that it is horizontal coma, rotated 90 degree clockwise.  How to resolve this issue?

How are coatings thicknesses applied

In terms of physical thickness, when a coating is applied on a face of say a rectangular volume, does it change the actual thickness of the rectangular volume ? or is the coating’s thickness is assimilated to 0 in terms of direction/propagation of rays ?in other words, do coatings only modify the amplitude/energy of rays, or also their locations/directions (like a regular parallel plate for example that also shifts the oblique rays) ?

Polarization ray tracing in non-sequential mode

Hello there friends from the Zemax community,Once again, I would like to ask for your guidance/help with something that I need to implement.I am interested in performing a polarization ray-tracing analysis in non-sequential mode. Let me explain a bit more about what my situation and setup is.I start from some FDTD simulations from where I extract far-field information (Here I model a single point emitter).Since I am assuming that there is no source of decoherence, from my FDTD simulation I am able to extract values of field components (Ex, Ey, etc) that match to a single wavefront surface. In summary, I have a point source for which I can extract the far-field information.Using these field components, I have managed to generate the Poynting vector and consequently used this information to set up a sequence of rays which I import into Zemax. In this case, for each ray I have the direction cosines and the relative intensity which corresponds to my previously calculated Poynting vector.In

Tolerancing polygon prisms - Fresnel Rhomb

Hello,I am designing a Fresnel rhomb prism as a half wave plate alternative using ZnSe at 4-9um.I calculated the phase differences as a function of TIR angle and created a polygon .POB file, inserted it as a non-sequential object and verified with CODA 123 that the polarization rotated 90 deg.However, I tested this out across the wavelength range with no change to the merit function, while the analytical formula expects a 0.3deg difference due to dispersion.Another issue I am having is that I don’t really know how to tolerance a polygon. The only idea I have come up with is to make many objects, “Monte-Carloing” it myself.Please share any insights or guidance. Note:The additional reflection facets at half angles are for PBS coating, the prism will be used as a beam combiner. I intended to simply use a table coating file Tp Ts Rp Rs, and make two configurations for the two sorces but I am unsure if this is correct for a tilted incidence angle or if there is a better way to model the bea

POP alternative for ZBF analysis

 Hello Zemax community, I have a source (ZBF) file which is Gaussian-like in one axis and Lorentzian-like in the other. In addition to the ZBF file, I also have the x and y cross-section far-field angular distribution of power (something like a representative goniometric scan in both axes). Source near-field: Source far-field:​I am re-imaging the source through an optimized lens pair, with the goal of understanding the resulting image plane characteristics - primarily understanding if/how diffraction effects through the lens pair might result in an enlarged / rounded spot. Initially, I thought POP would be suitable, but the NA of the source seems to be too large, so I am looking for another way to accurately characterize the resulting image. Looking for some advice on a good alternative approach. - Partially coherent image analysis starting with the ZBF as object? - Ray optics / Huygens PSF? Is there a way to mimic the Lorentzian-like profile in one axis only for the apodization factor

Why do GRIN index profiles in NSC mode transmit less light with ray splitting at various refractive indicies?

I am doing some ray tracing through some simple GRIN lenses.If I take GRIN3.dll, depending on what I set to n0, I get different results for intensity with ray splitting on, and the ray passing through the center of the lens (so no bending occurring). Here is an example: n0 = 1, 100% transmitted n0 = 1.5, 96% transmittedn0 = 2, 88% transmittedThis occurs with all GRIN dll’s (not just GRIN3), and does not occur with simple ray splitting. It functions as normal without ray splitting on. This doesn’t make physical sense to me. Why is more light reflected from a light ray at normal incidence at higher refractive index without specifying any specific scatter model, split model? As a note, I do not have any scattering, volume physics, coatings, etc in these.It appears to be some kind of index dependent ray reflection? No idea why that is happening. Going out to more extreme refractive indicies, it just trends towards 0 slowly. A few other notes - Adding in coatings does not change transmissio

Astigmatism of tilted mirror

Hi,I tried to evaluate astigmatism of curved tilted mirror in sequential mode. Astigmatism is obvious, but Seidel coefficients are zero. Also in Merit Function Editor parameter “ASTI” returns zero. Maybe the reason is that Seidel coefficients ignore the coordinate breaks for tilting.Did not find any topic describing this fact.Does anyone have a solution for getting Astigmatism of focusing system with tilted objects?
