Is anyone else having a very slow opticstudio install. It's been 'extracting files' for over an hour now from the install file on the local C drive. It seems we now have to put up with a slow installation alongside the slow and buggy UI!

Hello, I set up a telecentric optical system consisting of multiple lenses. Now after optimizing the system my spot radius appears smaller than the airy disk radius. I would assume the airy disk is the smallest possible spot my system would have when free of any aberrations. How is it then possible for the system to have an image quality even better than the airy radius? Is that an error in my system or does Zemax have a different definition of spot radius/airy radius? I have created a rectangular detector in a scattering medium volume to measure power generated by a Gaussian light source, and I found the reading is higher than the light source emission I set up. This puzzled me for some time. My question is, does the detector count from both sides? I am wondering if the higher reading is becuase each time the scattered photon hit the detector area, the count is registered, and this could happen multiple times for a photon. Any idea on this? Thanks.

Hello, I need to design a relay lens system that is added to a fiber bundle system with the following requirements: a 650 mm to 700 mm track length for the relay lens system, and maintaining the dimension and shape of the image formed at the end of the fiber bundle by preserving the optical power of the system. The fiber bundle has a diameter of 280 mm and most of the optical elements in the system have diameters ranging from 140 mm to 160 mm. I was thinking of using a symmetric achromatic doublet system to achieve this, but the image does not carry through. If anyone has any feedback on how to approach this issue, I would appreciate it. 

Hello All, How does OpticStudio calculate polychromatic rms wavefront error? I tried my own formulation and couldn’t get a match. Derived from Born & Wolf, the sum of the Strehl weighted peak irradiances divided by same in absence of aberrations.  u is the slope of the marginal ray or a/f in the Born & Wolf formulation. I want to analyse the impact of the surface roughness on it but I don´t know how to relate the scrach/dig parameter with the parameters that appear on the tolerance wizard or with the tolerance operands. Dear Zemax Team, I would like to model and optimize an optical system that utilizes two parabolic mirrors. The mirrors would be placed in such a way to create an approximate 1:1 imaging system from an optical fiber (mode size ~ 2.5 um). I would like to know the position tolerancing for the two mirrors in order to minimize the spherical and chromatic aberration of two colors, 370nm and 780 nm. Furthermore, it would be ideal if the system works with the Physical Optics Propagation tool to visualize the beam and to predict the expected fiber coupling efficiency. I have been able to create the system such that it looks appropriate in the ray tracing system, but the optimization feature and the POP produce results that are quite unexpected. I expect this is attributed to user error as opposed to the 'real' results. I have attached my working zemax file for reference. Thank you for all your help! Regards, George

Hi, I am trying to optimize a lens in NSC. Given by our limitation, I need to keep the focal length while optimizing the thickness, radius and other properties. In sequential mode, EFFL could work. However, I cannot find the corresponding operand in NSC mode. Does anyone know how to do it? Many thanks!

Dear Sir/Madam, May I check with you if it is possible to model the source object such that it can include the re-absorption of light rays in the simulation process. For example, when we have a mirror besides the light source (which is a source volume rectangle), some of the light rays emitted by the light source will be reflected back and pass through the source volume rectangle again. In reality, light rays might be re-absorbed by the material used to construct the light source. I would like to check with you if it is possible for Zemax to simulate this process Besides that，can Zemax simulate amplified spontaneous emission？   Best Regards, Niu Jing

The exit pupil of my system is elliptical, I want to know the rule of  zernike fitting in OpticStudio, especially when the wavefront is elliptical. Will OpticStudio use a elliptical polynomials ? I use my own program with circular polynomials to fit the wavefront in matlab, and get a diffrent result. But this question is not remained in circle wavefront zernike fitting .

Hi! I am trying to set up a system with different configurations of a light source. The light source is defined by a source file and set up as a circular array with a certain radius. I would like to change the radius of this circle between different configurations of the system. Is there a way to reach this radius parameter by a multi-configuration operand?   The ZPL function SETNSCPROPERTY seems to have a way to reach in and do this. SETNSCPROPERTY (keywords)   Sets properties of NSC objects. Syntax: SETNSCPROPERTY surface, object, code, face, value Code Property The following codes set values on the Sources tab of the Object Properties dialog. 112 Sets the array mode; 0 for none, 1 for rectangular, 2 for circular, 3 for hexapolar, and 4 for hexagonal. 165-166 Sets the array mode double precision arguments 1 and 2.   I have tried to set this with the NPRO operand

I'm using the ZOS API to work with ZAR files our engineers produce. We're using ZAR files since there are CAD files associated with the ZMX file. I want to open a ZAR file. There aren't any examples of how to do this, and `TheSystem.Tools.OpenRestoreZAR` isn't well documented; for example, `get_ArchiveFile` isn't in the docs. Hi everyone, Can you guys help me. Does the ray emitted on Zemax in POP depend on the number of samplings? Or is it determined by something else? I use sampling of 256 x 256, and in POP analysis, I want to know how many rays that emitted in each of the column of the sampling. For example, in my opinion, in each column, there might be have only one ray or maybe more than one.   I really hope someone can teach me and I would love to learn it.

A possible impact on MTF of a complex beamsplitter coating has been investigated on a simple system comprising three lenses and two prisms on top of each other. Coordinate breaks and MIRROR surfaces were used to 'construct' the prisms in 2-D. The said coating has been applied to one of the MIRROR surfaces. The system is polychromatic, on-axis (one field only) and 'polarisation' has been checked in the FFT MTF Setup Window. Now a surprise: with the coating applied or not the values of MTF differ by up to approx. 3 precentage points in the medium frequency range in 'all fields' mode as compared to the 'field 1' mode. This is not dramatic but very probably shouldn't happen... Any explanation? Thank you, Dusan

Hi I am looking for a way to optimize in the following manner: Using the non-sequential editor, I have positioned four sources in a square configuration with variable power settings, and a number of rectangular detectors at stepped distances from the sources.  The furthest detector is object number 17. For the sake of argument, let's say that the detector shows a minimum flux of 0 and a maximum of 1.0E-04 I want to optimize the power settings on the lamp so that I can get a minimum flux of 1.0E-09 and a maximum of 1.0E-05, and an even distribution of power settings for the sources. I have tried to use the 'spatial uniformity' wizard to get this. The wizard and the grid are as below. I have let this run to completion, but it seems to leave one of the sources at very high power, while reducing the power in the other three. All I am looking for is a way of adjusting the source power in all ources evenly so that the flux is in between a minimum and a maximum, Is there a way of doi

Some of the commands in the ZOS-API have both "double" and "out double" values. What is the difference between the two? Why the distinction? 

For hammer or global optimization using 'Substitute' I would like to use 1st Material catalogue for 1st lens in the system (or a group of lenses) and 2nd (another) Material catalogue for 2nd lens in the system (or 2nd group of lenses). How to do it?
