Problem with ray tracing in a spire optical fiber

I have a problem with the ray tracing in a CAD object. The structure I want to simulate is a spire plastic optical fiber, as the one depicted in the image below. As I don’t know how to generate this object in Zemax (is it posible?), I designed it in SolidWorks, both cladding and core. However, in such a closed loop (2mm radius), there is no light propagation, and I achieve a high transmission. In order to verificate, the simulation is incorrect I put all the structure in a rectangular volume of the same refractive index as the cladding (1.4). In consequence, when the light escapes core and reach cladding, total internal reflection should no occur. The ray should be propagated to the volumen, as there is no RI difference. In the image below, it can be seen it does not happen as predicted. I suppose the problem is related with the render of the 3D object, but is there any solution to this? Thank you in advance.

Is there a way to plot symmetrical rays in non-sequential mode?

I want to make a presentation and need to include some NSC 3D layout plots from non-sequential mode. I know the rays displayed are randomly chosen, but is there a way to choose symmetrical rays, so as to have a similar effect as the plots produced in sequential mode?   Thank you.

Hello, I have built a default merit funcionbased on the spot size and put variable on my mirror radius. But my mirror has negative surface. How can I change the merit function and system to get a opposite mirror?   Thank you

Focusing and Collimating light sources in NSC with merit functions

Hi there, I just have some queries about using merit functions to determine the z-distances between the components within my light path, to create both a focused and a collimated light path (see image 2 below).   Overview of the light path design: At the moment I have a stripped back version of my final light path (see image 1 below). It includes a UV LED operating at a wavelength of 0.233, an Edmund Optics lens (imported from the 'Lens Catalogue'), and a detector rectangle. My objective is to use the merit function to determine the z-distances between each of these components to generate a collimated light path and a focused light path. A photodiode has not yet been chosen so I currently need to know where to place my components for a collimated path (larger diode) or a focused path (much smaller diode). At the same time, I want to be able to get the most power possible at the detector.     I was just hoping to gain some advice and insight into the best m

Fresnel Phase Change in NSC Tracing

I’m using Non-Sequential mode to model some interference behavior. I’m trying to figure out if the Phase that is reported by “Coherent Phase” from a detector rectangle INCLUDES the phase shift that occurs at boundary reflections (from Fresnel equations), or if that phase is purely based on the OPL along a ray? I spent the whole morning reading KB articles and documentation on this and eventually I had some luck seeing the expected pi phase shift by using a polarized ray source (Jx=1) and detector rectangle with Polarization parameter = 1.   However, Jy=1 and detector Pol = 2 did NOT show a phase shift even though my ray is incident at near normal incidence.  I saw no impact of changing the Polarization Conversion method (X-axis vs Y-axis) used.   Very confusing. What I want is interference fringes that show the proper phase including the effect of the phase shift induced by Fresnel coefficients that works for both polarization

Create lens with a given surface

Hello. I would like to create a lens, but with a specific output surface , so all the optics will relay on the input surface using the merit function . It is possible to include a CAD surface in sequential mode? if not, How can I model the surface I have as input if have not got any symmetry? (mostly all the available surfaces have a rotational symmetry).

Silicon Window

Hello, I'm implementing a SWIR sensor package in an optical design. The latter is composed of the sensor and a Silicon entrance window. I'm looking using the Silicon material from the Infrared.AGF material file, the problem is that an error message is returned: the material is valid from 1.36 micron, while my design considers wavelengths down to 0.9 micron. What would be the best workaround for this? (since the material is not defined over the complete spectral range, optimization, and analysis wont work properly) Thanks much for your feedback

Why the RMS spot radius is different from the Spot diagram VS Merit function RSRE ?

I am trying to find the best way to compare results for my system tolerances and I would like to find a good estimation of my focused spot size and coordinates changes. I would like to understand why there is a difference between the RSRE merit function value and the spot diagram value of the RMS spot radius if I am using the following : Spot diagram : use 200 rays along the width and height in the spot diagram (rectangular pattern). RSRE : have 100 rays for 1 pupil quadrant which means 200 rays along the pupil width (rectangular pattern). The RMS spot radius is : Spot diagram RSRE 1.68739222E-02 um 1.693374956387612E-005 mm = 1.693e-2 um Thank you for your help

Combine Aperture with Jones matrix

Hello. recently we are trying to combine with 3 things (UDA parts, jones matrix and rectangular volume) in one aperture , but we found that the polarization likely doesn’t work if we combine with jones matrix. so may I know how to solve it? Thanks!

Source TE Polarization

Hello together, how can I model a TE polarized Source Diode? Short to the background: I want to hit an object with the light beam and than I change the angle of incident. So normally you should see the Brewster angle, don't you? My problem is, that I can not see the Brewster angle. Thank you very much for your help. Best Christian

POP settings

Hello, Could you please help me with a following question:   I modelled a simple spectrometer and I want to see how the slit width affect an image spot. I see that POP plot and Huygens PSF plot look very different (attached)   So, I have 2 questions: If I have no laser beam, no fiber coupling, but just ' ambient light' ,which POP settings should I use to see the diffraction effects from the slit with different width ? I mean which Waist Size should I choose? Beam waist or Top hat ?   2. Why Huygens PSF plot looks quite unusual for the some wavelengths?   Thanks, Lena

Wavelength Weighting and RMS Spot Size

Hi,   I have a bandpass filter, so I have modeled my wavelengths with different weightings around the center. I understand that this will automatically be taken into account in the Default Merit Function, when doing optimization.  What I am unsure of, is whether this is taken to account in spot diagrams, and other analaysis features. If I make a spot diagram, showing all of the wavelengths, when it shows the RMS, is it taking into account the wavelength weighting ? Thanks you

Drawing Transparent Rays

Hi, I am currently wondering if it is possible to set the opactiy/ trasparency of optical rays without merely adjusting the number of layout rays (currently I use an ellipse/annulus or circular source array and adjust the number of layout rays) - such that one could create a fully transparent 'beam' in NSC. Additionally, would it then be possible to create intensity dependent opacity, such that after propagating through an IDEAL 0.80 0.20 coating, the two rays path are 80% and 20% the original intesnity respectively? Zemax with Solidworks components

I have Solidworks components in my Zemax files. Do I need to have a Solidworks license available to run ray trace on such a file or just having Solidworks installed on the machine is adequate?

geometry error in ray trace

I get this error : Error Geometry error : NSC groupe surface 1 source 2 Gem=ometry error object 11 detected when doing a ray trace. then the ray trace stops and I cannot do a proper analysis as not all the rays have been traced. object 11 is a prism with a uncommon shape that I imported as a CAD object. The NSC 3D layout shows the correct geometry and no error is reported what can I do to identify the geometry issue

Automatically Update NSC Object Properties after being created by a ZPL macro?

Hi Zemax Community, I wrote a macro to create a number of objects in Non-Sequential Mode and pass various details to be sent to a specified .dll, including the Split option, DLL, Orders, and all the other details required for the .dll. When I run the macro, the objects are created as expected with all typical details showing up in the NSC editor (e.g. positions, tilts, size, thickness, material, etc.). However, in the diffraction tab, only the correct Split, DLL, and Orders show up (correctly) while the edit boxes for the details for the .DLL are not present: If I then change the DLL and then set it back to the original, desired DLL, the edit boxes appear with the values I passed to the object originally: Is there a way to have this show up properly without manually changing the DLL to a different DLL, then back again for each object? The main reason I wrote the macro was to auto-create many objects instead of manually entering values into each element. Additionally, if I copy an obj

Definition of angles in angle space analysis

Hi, the image below shows a sample non-sequential ray trace result in angle space using the detector rectangle.     May I know how are the angles in x any y defined? Is it defined as θx and θy shown in the diagram below? If not, what's the correct definition and how can they be derived from direction cosines of the ray vector (red arrow)?

POP Arbitrary Input Beam

Dear Sir or Madam, I have a distorted wavefront from a physical beam I am using in the lab. I would like to use this measured beam profile (see below) and simulate what kind of aberrations this leads to in my downstream optics. What is the easiest way to define a constant refractive index in non-sequential mode? I don't care for the wavelength dependency, I just need to define a constant refractive index for a Rectangular Volume object. Thank you.

Can I set a detector and let it works in NSC in mixed mode?   if not, can I set an illumination image target on SQ image surface to do optimization that works like Bitmap optimization in pure Non-sequential mode?   Best regards, Kevin
