Data Columns in Optics Studio

Dear all, do you know if there is a limitation on the number of EXTRA DATA columns in Optic Studio? Previous Zemax provided just 242 columns. I need to import ~ 500 data points to a user defined surface. Any help is highly appreciated. Thank you and best regards, Mario

New Wide-Angle Features in 22.1

Hi Zemax team,Congratulations on both the 22.1 release and the STAR module winning the Prism Award! That was great to see.I’ve been playing with 22.1 and it’s tracing wide angle lenses really well. That said, there are a few things I don’t really understand, or didn’t expect, in the performance. Put simply, it’s working better than expected, and I don’t really understand why  There’s a zip file attached with two ZARs in it that illustrate my points.Wide angle lens 200 degree field_MN.zosThis lens is my version of the 200 degree sample file, modified to use a maximum field angle of 105.1 degrees. The chief ray lands at an angle of 89.49 degrees and the upper marginal at  89.949.This is really close to 90 degrees at which the ray is tangent to the surface and does not enter the lens. It’s real grazing-incidence stuff. But now, check out the Ray-Aiming tab:We are not using the Robust Ray-aimer, or the Enhanced aimer. It’s the plain-vanilla Paraxial reference ray-aimer doing all the heavy

Simulation of LED-Array in Sequential mode

Hi everyone, I’m currently trying to simulate an LED-Array in sequential mode and I’m running into a bit of trouble. For first approximation, I simulate the LED-Array using a 5 fields. I’m planning to use a merit function for optimization using the GENF (Enclosed Energy) which only works for one field at a time. But as my aim is to describe the entire enclosed energy of all 5 fields at the image, I can’t properly tell Zemax the optimization target. My options are:Find a better operand for the merit functionDescribe the entire system in the NSC → Is there something similar to the enclosed energy operand?Describe the LED-Array as one field for first approximation. But as far as I know, there is no way to define a beam profile in SC which could be built corresponding to the different angular intensity of the LED-Array. Does anyone have an idea about this? Thanks in advance.

Sensitivity Analysis of a NSC System

For the sake of better understanding the impact of individual components I played with tilts and decenters of lenses imaging a diode array in the far field. One of the criteria was the far field divergence i.e. a rather precise cross-section profile at a certain distance. Due to tilts and/or decenters the image of the diode array on the (stationary) detector moves up and down. As such the image (footprint of the array) provides a certain degree of information (see attached) but it is impossible to apply e.g. the “Cross section row” feature in order to obtain a precise profile shape or get the correct numerical values thereof. This feature obviously works correctly only if the image lies on the X-axis of a detector. It is of course, possible to shift the detector in Y direction to place the (shifted) image on X-axis but it would be difficult to hit the precise Y-shift value.Is it possible to add a “self-center” feature to “Cross section row” (or column) for such cases? Any other ideas/

Using user-defined variable parameters in the optimization process Dynamic CAD link model

Hello, Zemax community!I am interested in optimizing an optical system with an imported CAD model (collimator). Zemax knowledgebase has an excellent article explaining how to use dynamic model links ("Using the OpticStudio Dynamic CAD link"). However, only model parameters that are explicitly used in the model can be used in optimization. This slows down optimization when it comes to optimizing a surface profile that can be plotted using a few dozen points rather than a few polynomial coefficients. This is inconvenient when it comes to optimizing the surface profile, which can be constructed using several tens of points or several polynomial coefficients. Unfortunately, the curve equation coefficients specified by the user in the CAD program are not displayed in OpticStudio. Is there any way to use user-defined parameters of the CAD model in the optimization process in OpticStudio?

Simultaneous reflection and refraction within one CAD file in sequential mode

Can anybody answer to me?I’d like to know there is a way for setting simultaneous reflection and refraction within one CAD (stp)  in sequential mode as below figure.Absoultely, it can be compromised in non-sequential mode but what I want to make is “in a sequential mode”.For inserting stp file in sequential mode, I am using Non-sequential component in one surface layer.  I appreciate someone comments to me in advance.

2nd order aspheric term in Zemax

Dear Optics Experts,while manufacturing an aspheric lens, I wondered why Zemax has the second order term, i.e. the r^2 term, in the aspheric surfaces, which is also in the help pdf? Other definitions of aspheric surfaces leave out the r^2 term, which seems to make sense to me, as the r^2 term seems to closely interfere with the spherical radius. This becomes then a bit confusing also towards the manufacturers. Is there an advice when to use this 2nd order term in aspheric optimization? Also when to use a (or only a) conic term?Also the tool Best Asphere does not use the 2nd order term.Thanks you for the advice!Markus

Removing spherical aberration from optimization

I followed the Zemax tutorial for how to optimize a simple lens in OpticStudio.What I would like to do is create a lens for collimating a beam but which is optimized to reduce higher order aberrations. I don’t want to worry about spherical aberration, because we can reposition the fiber to different distances at different angles.I’m not sure how to configure such a thing given the optimization wizard shown in the tutorial. Is there an easy way to specify this is what I want to do so the optimizer knows that?

fiber optic focalization

Hi,I'm very new on Zemax... (just a few exercises and tutorials)I am struggling with the simulation of an optics for a time-of-flight system.I have an optical fiber with 105 um 0.22 NA core and I have to focus it in the best possible way at a distance of 20 m (now I set 200 mm, to test if the optimization works). In the end my purpose is to compare the results obtained using a commercial fiber optic collimator and a custom one, but I'm not able to optimize any distance or curvature.I think I'm getting the merit function wrong / not inserting the right operand or constraints...Can you help me? I attach a screenshot of what I have now.

Hi All,I have a optical imaging setup contains an objective lens and a tube lens.I tried to define three configurations which difference among them is the distance of the rays source from the first surface. Also, each of them should be at different Y position which I did through Field Data Editor. But when I go for the layout and I select to see only config. 1, all fields are present. Am I doing something wrong here?I appreciate it if you tell me your experience.  Kind regards,

Model Fresnel reflection in non sequential mode

Hi, I am wondering how to include Fresnel reflection in a simple non sequential model : I have a pipe from which I am entering with light from the side. In order to verify if Optic Studio already models reflection at the air-glass interface, I have placed a detector before and after the interface. With 1 W source power I get the same on the second detector, both for normal incident light and light tilted at an angle. This makes me think reflection is not taken into consideration here. On the other hand, if I check the transmission vs angle plot I can see transmission is computed correctly:Why is detector 2 then not giving a total power of 0.96 W at 0 incident angle? How can I model it in a way I have this information on my detector? I have tried to tock the reflection option for the front face of the object, but this results in a mirror like behavior, which is not right either: Thank you to whoever will answer me!Giulia.

Define Zernike polynomials into an elliptic pupil

Hello,I am trying to add the Zernike polynomials (i.e add WFE) into my optical sytem provided by a WaveFront Analyzer.My entrance pupil is elliptic and so on the collimated wave front analyzed.I know how to implement the zernike polynomials for a circular pupil. I would be interested in if it is possible to define an elliptic pupil and how while transfering the .dat file of the polynomials.Here in the attached picture the semi-diameter of the pupil is 1.5mm I want to switch it to an elliptic pupil (two axis to be defined).Many thanks in advance,Ben

Critical ray tracer not working from Designing a microscope objective with OpticStudio - webinar

I am not seeing all the rays  with Pass  like the Webinar youtube video showed. I did the following: select Critical Ray Tracer made sure input file .CRS from last file right before converting to Non Sequential pressed okThis is what showed afterwards This is how the webinar screen looked:  So I  do not know what I did wrong to not have the same amount.  Does anyone know the reason or how to fix it?  Thank you in advance  Very Respectfully,  Laya

Detectors in Mixed-Non-Sequential mode don't see the rays

Hi all,I simulated an imaging system consists of objective lens, doublet lens, and a reflective object which is the point non-sequential objects coming in the path. All ray tracing work well for all objects and can be easily observed in the 3D optical layout, but the problem is when I add a detector after the reflective object. Rays doesn't reach the detector and even if I bring the detector closer to the reflective object, nothing would be observed in the detector viewer. While if I use another non-sequential object ray tracing would be fine and they go on their path.  I would be happy if someone that has the same problem or know what is wrong here could answer the question.  Kind regards,

Hi,I am new to straylight analysis in OpticStudio, and would like some recommendation on which module(s) on the “Illumination & Stray Light Learning Plan” to take:https://www.zemax.com/collections/illumination-stray-lightI will likely be doing ghost and straylight analysis on small refracting and catadrioptric objectives for Earth-observation cameras. I will also need to design baffling systems.I am pretty sure I won’t need the “Illumination systems: optimization and tolerancing” module but I am not sure if I would need all the other modules to fully understand the last one, “Stray light”, which will be definitely the most useful to me.Thanks for any comment on this.Alba

How can I change the update mode in the ZOS-API?

I'm using the Interactive Extension to add several lenses to my sequential system. To make the program run faster, I want to turn off OpticStudio's auto-update feature while the lenses are added and edited, then I want to turn it back on once that is done. How can I do this?

 That is Fresnel lense.Is it possible to find the design if I know SF (focal length) and D (diameter) ?Not equivalent, but determine its real parameters as on the drawing.

Paraxial Gaussian Beam Analysis

Hello, I have a very simple system consisting just of a paraxial lens in sequential mode. Using the paraxial gaussian beam analysis mode I discovered that the M2-value does not have impact on Rayleigh range of the beam. How can this be? From my understanding z_Rayleigh is proportional to 1/M². https://www.primes.de/en/company/latest-news/what-aposs-new/new-detail/items/primestime-01-17-74.html Looking into the manual I did not find any information what Zemax exactly calculates if M2>1. Can I model a fiber optic system in OpticStudio?

I want to be able to build a system that allows me to model the coupling of a laser to my fiber optic, as well as the subsequent ray propagation through the fiber. Can this be done in OpticStudio?
