Glass substitution catalogs - needs menu and multiple catalog selection

Glass substitution needs improvement to provide users a selection of one or more glass catalogs to substitute from. A pull-down menu with checkbox enabling would be most convenient. Anyone else think so?

Collimation of light from DOE

Hi, i have set up a DOE, after the DOE i have placed diverging and converging lens. my aim is to have a collimated output, what i should do. what all the operands i should choose to acheive a collimated beam?.It would be helpful if some one help me this regard. WHen in MCE, is there the equivalent for a “Comment Line” ? One can use BLNK in Merit Function files, andone can use the “!” in the Tolerance Scripts. Is it possible to annotate parts of the MCE files ??

hi, i have a csv file with x by y cells. each cell row and column represents an x, y position in microns. each cell has a z height corresponding to the x, y position. I would like to import this csv file into a grid sag surface to create a surface in zemax. how can i do this?

How do I import CAD (stp) with separate faces?

When I import a lens as a step file, the whole object is one surface one face. How do I get separate faces?I’ve tried saving the object in CAD SW as exploded vs. solid, I’ve tried exploding the CAD in OpticStudio, nothing worked.Thanks

Optimizing the POP Irradiance data on a particular surface

Hello,I have a fiber and a lens as shown below: Fiber to Lens (here an example paraxial lens)After the lens I propagate using POP for 1km (10 surfaces with 100m each time). I am interested in the Irradiance along the beam. I use Gaussian Waist, total power and waist X and Y to define my beam.What I would like to do is to optimize the irradiance at a particular distance after the lens (focusing), by changing the distance between the fiber end and the lens distance. I would like to maximize the below quantity, where I(x,y) is the irradiance and Po is the total power defined in the beam definition.I have used POPD operator in the merit function to optimize the peak power or beam width. I also tried GBPS and ray based focus optimization. But when I trace the above equation from lens to the image surface (1km), I don’t see the irradiance being maximum.Can someone help me to understand this or provide a method to better optimize the irradiance on a a given surface place?Thank you very much

Python notebook to make SPCD files from CSV (example with THORLABS OSL2 halogen source)

Hello everyone, I made a small script to create a *.spcd file (spectrum file) for OpticStudio from a *.csv file. As an example, I manually created a *.csv file from THORLABS *.xlsx data for OSL2 (halogen lemp) and made the conversion.The main issue I ran into was that OpticStudio currently limits the number of entries in a single *.spcd file to 200, and the THORLABS document had many more entries. I have used the accepted answer to this post to downsample the data to < 200 entries.The code and SPCD file is available on my GitHub:https://github.com/Omnistic/make_spcd_from_csvThis is what it looks like in OpticStudio with the Libraries..Source Spectrum Plot, and the corresponding plot from the *.xlsx file:I hope this can be useful to somebody. Understanding the Ray Fan plot

HiI tried to understand the Ray Fan in OpticStudio and ran into this problem I have a paraxial lens imaging an on-axis object (zero height) with 10 mm semi-diameter pupil size and focal length of 50 mm. Image plane is shifted 5 mm away from the focus intentionally, so it is at 105 mm from the lens. The Ray Fan plot is like this Defocus term is the slope of this line and equals 0.05. Considering the defocus formula DF = focus shift x marginal ray height (10 mm) / focal length (50 mm) gives a 0.5 mm focus shift instead of 5 mm. I am not sure if I have problem with the definition of defocus term or with interpreting the Zemax data. Any idea?

Multi-Threading in Zemax:I am aware that Tolerancing operations and some Optimization benefit from Multi-Threading in Zemax Q1) Which operations or functions benefit the MOST from additional CPU Cores & Threads ?It is difficult to predict how effective additional $$$ spent on multi-threading CPU will impact Zemax. My most recent milestones with high end work-stations are : In 2017 a workstation with ~ 6 cores & 12 threads was fairly typicalIn 2018+ a workstation with ~ 36 cores & 72 threads was considered a fast work horse Obviously there is a balance to be established between the number of cores & threads, as well at the speed of the CPU itself, and turbo options. Q2) Here in 2023 what configurations of Cores / Threads / CPU speeds are people working with while running ZEMAX ? Results ?

Creating Thin Film Tapers

I want to share this because I wasnt able to find any information on it in my original searches and the help is a little confusing on the requirements. I’ll use the PT (polynomial) taper as an example since its what I used.To start with, an important element to remember is that anything in the coating has to come before it in the coating.dat file-so both the TAPR and the MATE have to be before the COAT to function properly. For each PT line, the first element is the order (x^2, x^1, etc) and the second the coefficient. As such, order zero defaults to 1, so it can be excluded here, but knowing its one is important for understanding how to generate coefficients. My initial error was that the coefficients (C2, C1, C0) where as follows, with a thickness d and a position x (in this case, looking at a single axis):C2*x^2 +C1*x +C0=d(x)However, this is inexact. For TAPR coefficient (g2, g1, g0) its more accurately the following:d(0) * (g2*x^2 + g1*x+g0)=d(x)To compare with the previous formu

Optimizing lens system for collimation

Hi, I am designing a system for collimating a source. My design still greatly suffers from distortion despite having selecting maximum distortion in optimization wizard for developing merit function. I have also tried using operands for distortion but it does not really help and rather increases the aberrations. i also want that after collimation of field points they should overlap at image plane and their sizes should be same for exact overi have attatched image simulation image for center field point(0,0), seidel diagram and 3-d layout. lap at image lane.

Shear interferometer

Hi everyone. No so long time ago I purchased the Shear plate (interferometer) from Newport https://www.newport.com/f/shear-plate-collimation-tester. The goal is to used it to evaluate the divergence of a beam expander (depending on the orientation of the interference fringes you can judge whether the beam expander is collimated, converging, or diverging). The beam expander that I want to evaluate is Galilean (custom designed). From the real measurements it is not always clear the orientation of the fringes and the number of fringes and there quality is quite poor, so I would like to simulate (or to get the Interferogram) in Zemax to correlate the real measurements with simulations.I guess, I neeed to use the Interferogram or wavefront map for it, however I am not very experienced with them. So, from the simulations I would like to get the interferogram that will be changing the orientation of the fringes by changing the distance between the lenses in beam expander. See the image dow

How to use non sequential operand NSDD with non-default angular range

Hi, I’m working in NSC tolerance on a task of calculating the flux on a detector within a certain field of view. Though I can limit the field of view angle on the detector in NSC editor, in merit function editor if I try to use NSDD to display the value of flux, the angular range does not apply and the flux over the default angular range of +-90 degree is applied. Is there a way of limiting the angle range of NSDD operand in merit function? Thanks.

Discrepancy in path analysis results with filter string

Dear Sir/Madam, I am trying to use path analysis to analyse rays that reach certain region of my detector (detector colour). So I use filter string to define the interested region. And the path analysis results is shown below. The detector is object 42.After that, I want to take a look of the first ray path shown in the document above in 3D layout viewer. So I opened the ZRD file in the 3D layout viewer accordingly and use the same filter string with &_1 added at the end. The result is shown below.It is surprise to me that in the above picture, there are more than 2 Branches shown. But according to the path analysis result there is supposed to be only 2 branches for the path number 1. So I tried to add&_1 to the end of the string of the path analysis window. The result is shown below:The number of branches changed to 50. May I know the reason of this discrepancy? Did I miss any step in order to see the first path in the path analysis results correctly?Hope can hear from you soo

NSC Named Filters Not Working

Attempting to use “Named Filters” feature in NSC OpticStudio 23.1.3, following the directions from the Help System. The feature does not appear to work.Ex:Does not filter for Source 144. It does filter, but the filter is random as far as I can tellHowever,Filters for Source 144 correctlyIn addition, an extra semicolon appears wherever the cursor left off when I minimize then re-open the Named Filters tab. The bug may be related.Named filters tab adding semicolon wherever cursor left when minimizing tab.Thanks!

Non-sequential Swept object

Anyone have an example of the NSC Editor settings you used to create a Swept object? My first attempts simply aren’t drawing at all, with various simplified examples, so I suspect I’m missing something very simple. But beyond fixing my simple problem, the documentation is pretty sparse for a somewhat complex object like this, and searching the KnowledgeBase or the Community turns up almost nothing, so it would be great to see some interesting things people have created or hear about challenges and pitfalls. Here’s a screenshot, and I’ve attached my files for those who want to dive deeper.

CAD files not visible

OS version 2022 R2.02My problem: I cannot select/use the new CAD files i placed in Documents\Zemax\Objects\CAD Files.So when in NSQ mode i make an empty object into a CAD part: STEP/IGES/SAT object, the selection pop-up does not show the new CAD files, but it shows old CAD files (that i made and used in previous Zemax versions) that are not even present in this directory anymore. And when i select one of these old CAD objects, they are even shown in the NSC 3D layout plot!! How is that even possible? Is it possible to refresh the CAD list?
