Lightning Trace / Combine with ZPL for Animation

I want to produce an animation of a non-sequential model.  The only way I know to do this is based upon a Knowledge Base article: ( Link to Article ).  Based upon the article, I can grab snapshots of the analysis window and store these as “frames” and later animate them.A non-sequential model can take a while to trace.  Lightning Trace can dramatically speed this up.  However, there are several issues:Lightning Trace does not seem available through the ZPL.  A script cannot execute lightning trace and update the graphics window. If an NSC Shaded Model window is used, and the settings are adjusted to Use LightningTrace, then all my rays turn black, obscuring the view of the detector where I want the person viewing the animation to see the illumination.Are there alternatives that enable a Lightning Trace to operate such that an animation can be created?Changing Display Mode to Lightning TraceBlack Rays Obscure Detector Results

Total internal reflection in sequential mode

I want to simulate a system, which contains a single mode fiber, and a none core fiber. At the end face of the none core fiber, the surface is polished to certain angle or titled (for example 47degree), so that the total internal reflection is expected to happen. The light beam will emit from the side face of the none core fiber. What should I do to make TIR happen? Is it possible to do it in ZEMAX sequential mode? Because I want to perform imaging analysis, such as aberration, sequential mode is needed.Thank you. Oliver

Align imported CAD coordinate system in non-sequential mode

Hi all,I’m currently facing a problem about aligning the correct coordinate system between my imported CAD file and the source ray.  So, I imported a CAD file into the NSC mode, and then I lunched a source ray to intersect with the CAD model. However, as the coordinate system between the NSC source ray and the CAD model is different. I can only do manual adjustment of the x,y,z position to attempt to intersect this two objects, and it is clearly not accurate.My question is, is there any operand or marco to help me get the global coordinate of two models? I think with the vlaue of the two global coordinates, I can adjust the value and ask the two align using zemax marco. Or is there any better idea to align these two objects in NSC mode? Thanks in advance.Daoming

lens design exported to Part designer

Hello thereI have a question regarding the “Part designer” functionality. I  would like to know if it is possible to export a lens design from sequential mode into the Part designer. It seems to me that is only possible with the Premium Edition but I have not found examples of this is done.Any help will be welcome,Kind regards.Diego

Tilted image plane

Dear Sir/ Mam,I have been using single Off axis mirror with a paraxial lens. There is a lilt in image is expected.To know the tilt in a 3D space I used coordinate break.  I can see the tilt in x and y with chief ray solve.Is it correct to assume the tilt angle is correct with respect to image plane in an off axis system? Why the image plane is drawn is not as expected? Expected image plane vs  actual drawn image plane How can I check tilt in z axis? RegardsKomal Thakur

Geometric image analysis of more than 1 field angle? Something equivalent to a detector in sequential mode?

Hi, I have a sequential imaging system that is illuminated by a ray bundle with an array of angles. Therefore, I have defined the about ~20 field angles and I would like to see the image at the image plane of all fields.  The problem that I have is that if I use the geometric image analysis, I can only view one field angle at a time. Or, if I want to view the full field spot analysis, I can only view the first 12 fields. Is there something equivalent to a non-sequential detector but in sequential mode where you can view the image from a variety, > 12 field angles, at once? Jake

Adding an new image to the image simulation

 Hello,I'm trying to simulate the image quality of a 3D printed optical lens, so I experimentally used a USAF 1951 test target as an object. To compare the results I'm trying to implement this optical system in sequential mode in zemax, so I needed the same object that is the USAF-Target image, but I don't know how to add an external image in zemax.Could someone tell me if there is a way to add an external image for image simulation?Thank you very much in advance!

BUG in Physical Optics Prop Irradiance units

Why does Physical Optics Prop irradiance use the watts per (lens units)² rather than the Units/Analysis Unit: Watts per (units specified)²?  My lens is in millimeters, but I need watts/cm² for the Physical Optics irradiance scaling.  I select Watts per cm² in the Units/Analysis Unit:, but the irradiance stays in Watts per mm².  Same if I select Watts per in² or any other irradiance unit.  Seems like a bug to me.

optimize the peak interdistance for spectrometer resolution

Hi,How can we be able to apply a threshold at 80% in Irradiance to detect two separate spots? I am referring to peak interdistance optimization to correspond to 80% of the maximum relative irradiance. Gaussian beam propagation in sequential mode and tilted surfaces

Hello,I have the following question:I have a spherical curved refracting surface with n=2 and a gaussian beam with distance d between beam waist and the point where the beam hits this surface. I am analyzing the beam parameters z0 (=waist location) and w0 (=waist diameter) after the refraction (GBSP, GBSW). This works fine and the results follow my theory.Then I implemented a vertical decenter of the refracting surface. This also works fine. The results look okay.When I implement a surface tilt instead of the surface decenter...also everything works fine.Then I tried the following:I first implemented a surface decenter with a coordinate break 1 and then a surface tilt with another coordinate break 2. And now I get results that make me doubt…Then I made the following: I compared the results of 2 scenarios:Scenario A: tilt 1, decenter 1.Scenario B: tilt 2, decenter 2.I have choosen tilt 2 and decenter 2 in a way that in both cases A and B angle of incidence (RAID) and distance d (RAGZ) a

Irradiance in GIA and Efficiency

 Hi,Something does not addup in the calculation of power and efficiency in my spectrometer setup. I have a following reported Irradiance, using 7pixels and 538 pixels( equivalent to 13um pixel size). I used the Total Watts of 1 and I used wavelength input of  255 to 345nm with 5nm apart, which all has the weight of 1.   The total efficiency is reported to be 100%. This means 1Watt input should correspond to 1Watt output on the detector to my understanding. However, when I take the numerical data After adding all the Irradiance together and multiply them by pixel size (13*13*1e-4), I get only 0.35 which is far from 1Watt. How does that work?Additionaly I have looked at the result for each wavelengths seperately with 1 Watt as total Watts. I added all the raddiance values over the y-position for each wavelength individualy and  multiply that with pixel size (13*13*1e-4). I added at the end all the results together to cover for all the wavelengths, this gave me 5.5Watts. Therefore, I dono

Difference between Detector Surface and Detector Polar

Hello,I am not familiar with non-sequential mode in Zemax and need some helps.Currently I’d like to design simple optical system (singular lens) with arbitrary shape aperture(ex: F-shape, slit, etc.) in front of it and want to get a light intensity distribution in curved detector(or hemispherical shape).So, I think that Detector Surface and/or Detector Polar would be the solutions and they will have the similar results, but I’ve got two different results: 1) Detector surface seems to show focal spot and 2) Detector polar shows just aperture shape image. It makes me confused. Could somebody kindly explain the differences between Detector surface and Detector polar?

Problem when I simulated an imported image

Hello everyoneI’m new with Zemax and probably I make some errors.I need to simulate an image using the image simulation tool (Analyze > Extended scene analysis > Image simulation). When I select my image, reported below, the software start to compute and then it blocks at 91% and I have to restart the program. 3 micron Gaussian spot setup - non-diverging?

Hi all,I hope you are all still well. Apologies for another query on my part!I have been aiming to simulate a system that consists of a 5x Galilean collimating beam expander consisting of a -50mm plano-concave lens (LC1715-B, Thorlabs) and 250 mm plano-convex lens (LA1461-B-ML, Thorlabs), prior to a 25.4 mm plano-convex focussing lens (LA1951-B, Thorlabs).The beam input to the beam expander is defined as having a 1/e^2 diameter of 2.6 mm, with a peak irradiance of 5.01 x 10^6 W/mm^2 and a divergence of 0.143 degrees (derived from an M^2 of 1.3). This theoretically gives an input beam of 13 mm 1/e^2 diameter into the 25.4 mm focusing lens, with this producing a focussed spot size of 3 micron (albeit with considerable spherical aberration). I wish to plot the axial peak intensity distribution of this rapidly diverging Gaussian spot using POP.I have been able to successfully collimate the beam expander setup using the REAY AND RAED operands within the Merit Function Editor. Top Hat collimated beam from Laserdiode

Hi everyone,i am trying to design a refractive beam shaper to generate a collimated top hat beam of emitting beam from a laser diode.Approach: To simplify the design, i defined the beam source circular and not elliptical. After parameter-design  for fast axis i will scale the lens and use the scaled parameter for slow axis. All as compound element. With the flint lens i try to achieve top hat distribution before clown lens and collimate it with the clown lens. Distance between lenses is not variable (about 2mm) for my merit function i took Spot Radius(Target 4mm)  + Spatial uniformity(Target 0) → NSC Variables: radius, conic, coeffr4, coeffr8 The result of optimization due to uniformity is nit satisfying.  Is there any additional merit function or any other method to achieve a good uniformity?

User Defined Apertures and Obscurations

I am working with the User Defined Obscurations as shown in the attached image. It's supposed to be an 'obscuration', as shown in the left plot. 'Aperture type' is set to 'obscuration'. It works as it should, but I can not see the obscuration in the footprint. In the right image, I set 'Aperture type' to 'Aperture'. Again, it does what it should. AND I can see the Aperture, which is nice. Why do I not see the obscuration if set to 'obscuration'? Is it a bug? Or am I doing something wrong? Convert from “Real Image Height” to “Object Angle” and reverse

Hi,   I have a non-rotationally symmetric system and in my application I want to convert “Real Image Height” to “Object Angle” and reverse. The conversion works fine for axially symmetric systems (like Cooke triplet) but it is not working correctly for a non-rotationally symmetric system. By that I mean, when I convert “Real Image Height” to “Object Angle” and then I do reverse, (from “Object Angle” to “Real Image Height”) I do not get the same “Real Image Height” values. I am wondering if there is any issue with “Convert to” or I should use an intermediate step to get the correct conversion.  Thanks,Soroush

Optimization - initial variations for the variables

Hello,I would like to know how the initial variations on the variables during the optimization are defined.It seems that the value used corresponds to a fraction of the original variable, so when this variable starts from 0 the change is very small and does not modify the merit function much, and the optimization is very slow especially for a large number of variables.Would it be possible to define ourselves this starting variation for each variable with a new option?Best regards
