Hi, I am a beginner in optics.I am trying to simulate the image from an aspherical mirror and a Fresnel mirror.First, I have a spherical mirror (ROC = 400mm, semi-dia = 150mm, object at a distance =10000). I convert it to an aspherical mirror (conic = -1), but I cannot find the best aspheric coefficient. And even when I have the aspherical coefficients (the ones I get from others) and I add in 4th & 6th order terms (3.08*10^-5 and 5.4*10^-6, respectively), it doesn’t work.Second, how can I convert that aspherical mirror to an idealized Fresnel mirror with the above parameters? I try to change surface 1 from an “even asphere” surface to a “Fresnel” surface in sequential mode. But it doesn’t work either.Please explain in detail for me. Thank you so much. 

Currently, the topics are all mixed in one big pile of which only the last few are visible. This is much less useful than with the previous implementation. Please reintroduce categories, along the lines of Sequential / Non-Sequential / POP or better yet, reuse that of the old forum and import the old messages so all that useful information is not lost.

I keep getting an issue where the Boolean Native/CAD disappear from NSC Shaded Model or NSC 3D Layout. I checked if they are being drawn, if the locations are proper and all the obvious stuff.using version R2.01Any one else encountering this issue?  

Hi all, I have asked ALANOD for a file such that I can used it to account for the scattering behavior of their 4270GP reflecting sheets. This one of their most specular reflecting sheet.I received their BRDF file from them and have employed it. The results that I obtain with simulation when compared to experiments suggest however that the degree of scattering in this BRDF file is substantially more than reality. More diffuse. Does anybody has this experience as well?Is there something tricky I can do wrong with the BRDF file?I have used it in combination with scattering fraction equal to 1 and tried both angles 0 and 90 degrees. Hope someone can help me. Kind regards, Pascal

In multiple fresh installs of Optics Studio 2023R2, I’m getting a glitch where a Boolean Native whose parent objects have any dimension (front or back radius, x or y half-width, z length) > 500 disappear from 3D Layout, Shaded Model, and Object Editor. This error occurs regardless of the lens units, and exactly 500 appears to be the cutoff point, as 500.001 in any dimension of the parent objects causes the glitch. The parent objects appear in all model windows regardless of size. The Booleans themselves do not actually disappear from the model entirely as best I can tell, as rays still strike them in ray traces, they are just not being drawn in the modeling windows. Is this a setting somewhere, or is this a glitch? Thanks,Angus

hello all,I am trying to simulate a two slab cavity absorption. As shown in the picture, the light is emitted from the side of the cavity. and the top and bottom cavity are made of silicon, which has an complex refrective index in visible wavelength. and also the top slab is coated with Pt, which can reflect most of the light but still got around ~7% absoption. My goal is to calculateHow much power is absorbed by the top and bottom slab What is the field distribution of light(power density) of absorption in top and bottom slabtwo issue I encountered nowI dont know how to model a material with complex refractive index. It seems the transmission property of materials catalog do not deal with polarization and incident angle? Hello,I’m currently trying to model a thin-film based fizeau wedge, and I thought using a coating taper might be a decent way. However, I’ve found only one example of tapers being used (the coating file), and very limited information in the help.Does anyone have some experience with how tapers work? Or some examples? My own attempts at finding additional information has been unsuccessful. 

“zemax no license for opticstudio was found” occurs while using Zemax. This error occurs about twice a day, and occurs when 2 to 3 Zemax devices are turned on. Additionally, I am using Zemax Premium. If you have experience resolving these errors, please advise me.

Hello,  I am using the "Explode" function to separate the CAD assembly file into parts.However, on some PCs, "Explode" operates normally, but on some PCs, an error occurs as shown in the picture below.Both PCs are using 23R2 2.01 version of zemax.I would like to ask for advice from someone with experience on why this error occurs and how to resolve it.  Additionally, if you load a normally converted file from an error PC, the following error occurs. 

My group is developing an optical model complete with tolerancing data.  We intend to turn this model into a black box file to disseminate.  We would like the people who have the black box file to be able to build their own optical system around the black box, including tolerances on their portion of the optical system.   We would like them to be able to run tolerance analysis on the overall system, incorporating the optical tolerances embedded in the black box’s optical model.Is this possible?  We have not been able to determine from the Zemax manuals if the black box file incorporates the tolerances of the optical model that was black boxed.Description of the work flow we want to happen:optical model with tolerances => black box => incorporated into larger optical model by 3rd party => tolerances placed on added optical components by 3rd party => 3rd party performs tolerance analysis on entire system, which incorporates tolerancing data from the black boxed optical model

I am trying to perform NSC tolerance analysis on a freeform illumination system that creates a discrete illumination pattern. I want to use the spatial uniformity of each discrete part of the pattern as the criterion for tolerancing. I am using an NSDD operand (#Pix=-4 and Data=1) targeting the standard deviation of non-zero pixels to 0.However, I have encountered an issue where dark pixels do not all have a value of 0. To address this, I am seeking a method to introduce a threshold that filters out these non-zero, yet small values on the detector. The objective is to exclude these values from the NSDD calculation. How can I effectively implement such a threshold?From what I understood, the Minimum Absolute/Relative Ray Intensity setting sets a threshold on the rays to be traced. But I would like to set a threshold on the detector and not on the raytracing. 

Hello,I have been tolerancing some achromatic doublets using vendor presets in OpticStudio (specifically the Edmund Optics presets) and had a question regarding the expected changes in effective focal length.Most of the lenses are manufactured to a tolerance of +/- 1-2% on the focal length, but the observed changes that I am seeing are smaller even when the tolerances are relaxed. For example, a 50 mm diameter 170 mm focal length doublet only has a focal length variation by 0.5 mm for 1000 monte carlo runs (wavelength is 632.8 nm)Is there something that Zemax does not consider when tolerancing that is leading to this discrepancy? I also imagine that I could be missing something obvious!Thank you,Musab

I would like to post something, with design files in ZARs in a Zip. What is the file size limit, please?Edit:To be specific, I would like to include a zar of a nonsequential design. The design file is 82MB, which compresses to 18MB in the zip file. The 82MB is really in the ZDA file, not the ZMX. I have tried to reduce this be tracing fewer rays, and by eliminating some windows, to no avail. I could of course post only the ZMX file, but then readers would need to reconstruct all of the analysis windows.Is there any way to produce a smaller ZDA file but still preserve its ability to reconstruct the analysis windows?

HiI am trying to propagate a matrix of independent Gaussian beams incoherently, but for some reason it seems that the beams are still interfering with each other (i.e. it seems that the POP is propagating the beams coherently).I have defined the beams as incoherent in a Multimode file:  Which looks like this: In the far field the intensity looks like this: It looks like there is interference (side lobes). Its possible to see it more clearly with a cross-section:If the propagation was incoherent, then the intensity should not dip where I have indicated with the red arrows, right? In addition, I am getting a nonsensical beam parameter product which is too low and implies coherent propagation. Maybe this is a problem with sampling or window size? Or syntax in the Multimode file?Can anyone help? :)

To convert to global coordinates, you will need to use the GetGlobalMatrix() method of the ILensDataEditor interface to retrieve a matrix for conversion.In other words, the results obtained by polarization ray tracing are in the local coordinate system. So what should I do if I want to obtain the electric field vector in the global coordinate system?

 EDIT:   MY MISTAKE. TOO MANY RAYS, AND I JUST DIDN’T WAIT LONG ENOUGH.THE _N FILTERS DO WORK WITH DETECTOR VIEWERS. Do the _n filters not work with detector viewers? I do a trace and path analysis to generate the filters. The _1 filter, and the others, work as expected in a 3D Layout. But when I set a detector viewer to use the saved zrd ray data, and use one of the _n filters on the detector viewer shows no hits and reports zero power.
