Hello,   I would like to change lens type in multi configuration. In specific surface, it may be sphere or toroidal. I will set a two multi configurations. One is sphere lens and the other is toroidal surface in SQ mode.   I check multi configuration operand in manual and can't find an operand that can handle this operation.   Best, Kevin

I have installed Optic Studio on my machine with a test licence and I each time a try start OpticStudio it crash silently. I have try OpticStudio_Prerequisites.exe and reinstalling the Visual C++ redistributables, like suggested in the help pages with no effet. I now have only 13 days to test the soft. Please help.

Hi All,   I have tried to use a real lens file of Thorlab Aspherical lens for fiber coupling. Link to file: Thorlabs - C660TME-C f = 2.97 mm, NA = 0.6, Mounted Aspheric Lens, ARC: 1050 - 1620 nm.  However, I can not be able to use it with Optical Fiber Coupling file where you use two identical lenses to simulate the coupling efficiency in the fiber.    What could be the reason? Why is there no quick reference guide to Zemax, which would contain only key lists, such as of non-sequential and sequential objects, optimization operands, tolerance operands and ray tracing keys? For brevity, the descriptions in tables that are in the manual could be dropped, just a one sentence example of use and description of functionality retained. Some other frequently used info, like shortcuts etc., could also be added. It is very inconvenient to scroll through the existing not very user-friendly manual trying to find the operand / object you need...

That's try to check math/eqaution details about how diffraction is calculated for ray-tracing. Here is some key points for taking back: The ray-tracing eqaution for grating and any phase profile are same. They are all based on the principle that projected wave vector should be continuous at material boundaries. The word 'conical diffraction' is explained. The 'phase' in OpticStudio mainly describes 'periodicity'. These diffraction calculation supports multiple-wavelength This is true for all diffractive surfaces like: Binary 2, Zernike Standard Phase, Grid Phase, Diffraction Grating, Elliptical Grating, ... etc. For Physical Optics Propagaion (POP) and metalens, the support to multi-wavelength for phase surfaces may be no longer true, but we don't discuss much here.  

Hi I have a defined a source rectangle in OpticStudio, and am trying to analyse the rays that it will produce. When I analyse it, the rays come out in a straight line orthogonal to the plane of the source, which is not what I expected, as I expected to see rays emanating out to the sides as well.  It is not a laser light, and I expected some diffusion to occur. Is there a way to find the resolution of a system that uses a microlens array (MLA) for imaging in sequential mode? Using the spot size (airy disc) or MTF doesnt seem to work with arrays. (I used the user defined .dll for building the MLA)

I am modeling Holograms in non-sequential mode.  I want to optimize recording angles and index modulation to optimize the diffraction efficiency and output angle of the reconstruction beam.  I have not found an example for making index modulation a variable.

Hi, all.  I encountered a weird problem. I try to see the energy distribution of a beam after it is reflected by a prism. But the total reflected energy is always greater than the total transmitted energy. I also tried to use the filter string 'Rn“，but the result remains the same. Hi, I am modeling an asymmertrical system for laser line excitation. The symmetry is broken by a Powell lens to create a top-hat illumination on the sample. The last element is a microscope objective (paraxial surface) after which the beam somewhat evenly irradiates the image plane along x-plane and is close to diffraction limit along the y-plane. I began tolerancing the system, includes a zoom triplet, and cylindrical afocal beam expansion and etc. I hope to achive diffractin limit along the y-plane, to do so i set two elements as compensators. When i set y-spot for tolerance criterion it seems to be working, however if i set the merit fucntion, that is defined for RMS y-spot, the compensator moves way out of its working limits and gives better (but false) results. Hi, I just upgraded to OpticStudio 21.1.2_20 but when I try and run the program via the Start menu in Win10, I get an error message saying that Opticstudio.exe has moved. I've searched my entire C; drive and can't find it. Anyone know where I can find it or should I try re-installing?   Thanks   Richard

Hi, 1. What is difference between waist size and beam size in 'paraxial gaussian beam data'? 2. As definition beam waist is minimum radial distance at focus and beam size is radial distance at surface then how different waist size mentioned for each surface? 3. What does x-width, y-width stands for?  4. In order to design a collimated LASER beam, beam waist should be equal to aperture value but why setting aperture parameters not define gaussian beam? Hi, I have a quasi-optical system where the source and detector are co-located. This is basically because I want to simulate a sub-THz system, or better a quasi-optical system, where the source\detector is a horn antenna, which radiates a gaussian beam. The system is made of the source, a lens, and a target. Ideally, the antenna illuminates the lens, which directs the beam on a reflective target. The lens also collects back (part of) the reflected beams and focuses them back on the detector.  What would be a good way of evaluating the directivity of the detected radiation? The non-sequential mode has a polar detector available, but it seems to work mainly to detect the directivity of rays coming out of a source. In other words, I would like to estimate the directivity of a source, whose rays are the same that the ones reaching my detector, but with opposite direction. Hi, I was reading Michael Cheng's excellent article Simulating diffraction efficiency of surface-relief grating using the RCWA method and have a question. In the FAQ section there is a part about comparing to the built-in diffraction model. Michael says: The main difference is that RCWA code will define the diffracted ray’s electric field while the built-in model cannot. I don't follow this last part.  Any ray must have a defined electric field because k.E==0 and you can easily check that diffracted rays do in fact have defined electric fields. Could someone (Michael?) clarify this part please?  - Mark 

Dear Sir/Madam，  I would like to know how the laser pulse looks like after it is reflected by a target. Can zemax perform such a task? An example is attached. The blue one is the transmitted pulse, and the red one is the received pulse at a certain distance. I would like to find the slow/long axis orientation of a Toroidal surface after a series of coordinate break. I tried GLCA,GLCB,GLCC  but they can tell the surface normal vector, but not the surface axis. Thanks.

Dear All, Sorry for this potential stupid question, I'm relatively a new optics studio user. I have an optical system with several configurations (several channels, to optimize pupil and image). I would like to perform a tolerance analysis and need to implement in the process a compensator to keep the collimation of my first optics. What is the easiest way for that ? - I though to create a new configuration and implement a paraxial lens and use the object frontal distance as a compensator. Problem: I didn't see how to change the surface type in the multi config area to implement a paraxial lens. - is it better to use a tolerancing script using the CMCO operand ? Other point, if I want to make a sequentlial analysis reprodcing my alignment procedure, is the best way to use the ZOS-API function for that ? Thank a lot in advance for your help

I have created a custom part using Part Designer.  I have exposed a few of the points so they are visible in the non-sequential editor.  My system is in sequential mode with the custom part inserted in the system.  I can use these points in the MFE, but when I try to add them to the TDE and run a tolerance analysis, Opticstudio crashes and closes.  I am using TNPA in the TDE.
