Does anyone know if zemax can use coordinate breaks to return to an ignored surface.

This feels like a silly question, but I am using OpticStudio 22.3 and have tried time and time again to open up the Optimization Wizard and Merit Function Editor, to no avail. I have restarted the program, restarted my build, restarted my PC and reinstalled OpticStudio, all to no avail. Am I missing something? Thanks so much!Very Respectfully,Becky

This is a short post just for sharing an example of setting up for resonant waveguide grating with Zemax RCWA.We will use the data in this paper: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/lpor.201800017In attached file, a grating is set up, following the paper, as shown below. The grating parameters are as below.Period = 0.4 µmDuty cycle = 0.5index of substrate = 1.6index of superstrate = 1.0index of the grating  = 1.7thickness of lower part = 0.3 µmthickness of upper part (binary grating) = 0.05 µmWe then intput a ray with TE polarization and 15 degrees incident angle with wavelength scanning between 0.546 µm ~ 0.552 µm.By observing the 0 order reflection ray, the result is as below. This matches to the Figure 8 in the paper.People can change the thickness of upper part of the grating to 0.025 µm and 0.1 µm to also check the result in the Figure 8 in the paper.Have fun!

Hi dear community,my question is about analysing the data resulting from a footprint diagram with different configurations and wavelengths. I have created an optical setup in sequential mode that includes a diffraction grating in order to separate wavelengths in the C-band. I use an “Object Space NA” aperture with a VCX vignetting factor to describe my input source, and the 24 separated wavelengths from two configurations are shown using the footprint diagram.(a) Model of the setup, diffraction grating in purple, surface to observe wavelengths in green. I designed a spectrometer with mirror transmission grating and lens system. i could not able to focus the beam spot within airy disk diffraction limit. i did optimisation added variables in the merit function editor , given weights changed them accordingly. i have seen some difference but not able to get it within the diffraction limit.  source as single mode fiber as point source with entrance pupil dia , 0.0042 mmwavelengths 815,840(central wavelength),860object distance 0.022 mm calculated for 1/e2 intensity NA at 0.09parabolic mirror MPD139-M01 - thorlabsfocussing lens AC254 150B - thorlabsi attached the file here. i tried many things but cant figure it out myself , can anyone help me out , i will be grateful Thanks indeed CheersAkshay

Hello, I want to extract PSFs of our company lens by macro of the optics studio. The lens is not suitable for the FFT PSF, so I have to extract Huygens PSF. I am interesting in spatial variant PSFs I need a macro code for the Huygens PSF so that I can extract PSF from the various points on the image space. Is there anyone who can show some examples codes for the Hugens PSF? Thank you and Happy new year!

Hello. I am trying to extract spatial variant PSF(svPSF) from my lens system. I have a questioin about svPSF and feild type of the opticstudio. The svPSF are caused by the positsion of the light source which is not on the optic axis. The posistion of the light sourced is necessary to me. I want to know the relation between position of the light source and the values of the field. I set “real image height” as the field type, but another field type can be good if the posistion of the light source can be easily estimated with it. Thank you.

I have attached an example of a TID file. This file contains the index of refraction at multiple temperatures and wavelengths. The first line contains the word PRESSURE followed by the ambient air pressure in atmospheres.Then the data consists of 3 columns: temperature, wavelength, and index.The temperature of the first data point defines the reference temperature for the glass.It can then be fitted with the Glass Fitting tool.Once you run the tool, you will get a report and this can be automatically added to a catalog.

When I reverse multiple elements in a zmx file that was the worst case MC runs, most of the materials disappear.When I reversed just one element, it did not erase the material.  And I have been reversing standard design files (vs MC file which has many coordinate breaks, and the material has offsets).  Has anyone else had this issue?  Is there a workaround?

Hi All,I am using a source diode which is propagating the light. The light rays pass through a laser rod from the side (cross sectionally) and the laser rod is in Z-plane(Longitudinally).  So if I want to assign TE polarisation to my source diode rays, is the following setup is right?Thanks in advanceAkhil

I’m trying to design a high NA objective lens. Due to the high NA, some of the objective’s first order properties, namely the effective focal length and image-space NA, seem to be wrong, most probably because their calculated under the paraxial approximation (the documentation for EFFL and ISNA even say as much). I tried to overcome this issue by defining the aperture as entrance pupil dimeter, and calculate the non-paraxial NA as the sine of the incident angle provided by the real ray trace in the image space. Assuming both of these are accurate, I could theoretically calculate the effective focal length as:EFL = EPD/(2*tan(asin(NA)))  My question is whether or not is this technique valid, and is there other ways to get the non-paraxial first order properties of a high NA system?

Hello, I have been looking for a way of obtaining the complex electric field of a system. My goal is to use the aberrated wavefront as input for a different system. I understand the Wavefront Map tool gives the wavefront aberration with respect to a reference sphere at the Exit Pupil, but I would like to know if there is a way to get the phase or OPL up to a reference plane of equal diameter as the Exit Pupil without having to do a ray trace and use OPTH iteratively. I was looking at this post about the Hyugens PSF and it seems like the Pupil Function might be what I need. I would appreciate any clarification as well as any guidance on how to obtain it. Thanks in advance.

In sequential mode, is there any way to check % vignetting directly in the merit function? Currently it seems that I can only access it by opening the vignetting plot, but this is not useful for optimization or monte-carlo analysis. For context, my application is tolerancing of a laser-mirror system. I would like minimized vignetting to be something I can base my tolerance compensator position on, as this represents beam clipping in the system.  I think tolerance analysis in non-sequential mode would solve this problem, but I already have large body of analysis in the sequential version of the file, so I would like to keep it consistent, if possible.  Thanks!

I am also relatively new to Zemax optics studio so please forgive me if any of this is out of context or obvious for the more experienced users. The question is if someone could give me some pointers on how to best model and optimise a Cherenkov Radiation Telescope. For those not familiar with the system the detector is used to identify particles by detecting the Cerenkov cone of light emitted at a precise angle by particles of a specific rest mass. The core components of the system are a Mangin mirror and a chromatic corrector that focus a ring of light in the image plane. See sketch below It is not obvious to me what would the best way to build this system in zemax and, given that you end up with a ring instead of a spot, what would be the best way to optimise it. Is it maybe better/possible to start with a 2d system and work the way up to the 3D telescope?Anyway, let me know if you need further input. I’m looking forward to he

Dear All,I have a situation here, where I have to shift the lens (image circle) with respect to image sensor/plane, and then visualize the output with image simulation. The image circle should be larger than the imager itself such that no pixels are lost. As an example, the normal vs the shift with larger image circle is shown. Standard vs larger image circle As shown below again, when the lens is shifted a different FOV is captured by the Sensor. This is what I want to simulate and then compare it with the unshifted position. How to achieve that? Simple Decentring the image plane doesn’t work, maybe i did something wrong? Another way could be is to move the lens system together with the field points but it doesn’t work as well, as field points are fixed? Any ideas, how to realize it? Thanks in advance

I am trying to export the incoherent irradiance information from the detector viewer along with x,y coordinates. Cross section row/column option allows only to export either x or y coordinate at a specific row/column. How do i export both x,y coordinates with irradiance at each coordinate? The detector grid size is 250x250 pixels.

Hi,I exported rectangular detector data (200 by 200 pixels) to .DAT or .SDF file to be used as a source file.  I want to this source file emanates rays in a hemisphere with equal probability in all directions (Isotropic) but I cannot find any options to do that.  I tried to make the source file with location only (XYZ) and with both location & direction (XYZ & LMN) (as shown in a figure below) and imported this file as a source file to my model.  Both cases give a same result under Polar Detector.Is there any way to make isotropic source from a detector?  I only want 2D intensity distribution source with isotropic emission for each location.Thank you!  

Hi.I am looking for an efficient way to manage large collections of user-defined apertures from the ZOS-API. As a compatible use-case, think e.g. of a database of eyewear lens shapes. The lens shapes (defined as UDAs) would ideally live in a case folder together with other information about the eyewear (think: prescription, etc.), and not in the standard folder used by Zemax. It seems like the only file location that UDA files can be loaded from to configure a ZOSAPI.Editors.LDE.ISurfaceApertureUser. is <Zemax>\Objects\Apertures. Passing a full path -- I am using python’s os.path.abspath() and have also tried just the verbatim path as raw string -- to the user aperture interface’s ApertureFile property does neither cause an error, nor result in the aperture file being used. Passing simply the name of a UDA file that is located in <Zemax>\Objects\Apertures works as it should.The location of the “Apertures” folder can only be changed by changing the location of the “Objects”

Hello Everyone,Imagine that we have two or more concave mirrors with skewly aligned / off-axis placed, looking to each other.  And suppose our object is an upstanding arrow. How can we explain that although we have curved mirrors as seen above picture we can still have an image uniform / undeformed as an image?Any comments on this is appreciated
