aperture type - EPD

Usually, the system aperture is the first parameter defined when starting a new design. The system aperture not only defines the size of the beam which ZEMAX will trace through the optical system, but it also determines the initial direction cosines of the rays launched from each field point in the Object plane. Entrance Pupil Diameter is perhaps the most commonly used system aperture type. In ZEMAX, the EPD is defined as the diameter of the pupil in lens units as seen from object space. That is, axial rays at the object appears to enter the system entrance pupil.

NSC modelling deformed mirror

Hi there, I am thinking of modeling a specific deformation on a mirror in my set up to help develope a pass/fail criteria. I have an interferogram (Zygo image) but I cannot make it into a Zernike model (it is rectangular), I will have to estimate and approximate the shape of the mirror by the data given. Attached an example. I can convert the profile cross-section (marked with red arrow) from fringes to microns, that should not be a problem. My question is: what non sequential object would you recommend that I’ll use for the mirror? Thanks!

How to catch transient error messages in ZOS-API

When using OpticStudio interface, it can sometimes display an error message. In ZOS-API, there are some methods under the IZOSAPI_Application Interface that allows to retrieve transient error messages: bool IsLoggingMessages { get; } void ClearMessageLog(); bool BeginMessageLogging(); bool EndMessageLogging(); string RetrieveLogMessages(); The general workflow is prior to whatever operation will generate the message you need to call BeginMessageLogging(), after the operation call RetreiveLogMessages(), then call EndMessageLogging(). These properties were added as 'feature experiments'.   For example, let's create an error in the file: '{Zemax}\Samples\Sequential\Objectives\Wide angle lens 210 degree field.zmx'. I am adding the field X=0, Y=120, Weight=1. It creates the error “Cannot determine object coordinates!”. I am now going to read that message in Matlab. I create a connection with the Interactive Extension. My lines in Matlab are the following

Path analysis and bulk scattering with wavelength shift

Hello, I'm using Zemax OpticStudio 18.4.1 Premium in the non-sequential mode. My optical system consists of a light source (source radial) with 2 wavelengths and 1e5 beams, 2 detectors (rectangular) and a bulk scatterer (volume physics -> angle scattering) with wavelength shift. So far it is working as I would expect it. But when it comes to ray analysis there are some, at least to me, miraculous things happening. I saved a ray file (polarization, scattering and ray splitting on) and tried to use filter strings in the path analysis window. At first sight it seemed to work but only on the first sight. For example, I tried to get only the beams with wavelength shift. So I used 'X_WAVESHIFT(1,2)' and I got a result. In addition I tried 'X_WAVESHIFT(1,2) & H9' (Object 9 is the one with the bulk scattering properties; the only one in the system) and I got a different result (smaller power). How is that possible? COATING OPTIMIZATION

Hello everyone, I am pretty new at opticstudio, i need some guidence for the lense data in case for coating optimization problem. my system made of only of BK7 glass with thickness of 50 mm with 5 layer of custom coating (as you can see below) on surface 1, which i would like to analyze and reach the minimum reflection vs. wave length as possible. In the lens data (pic below) you can see the parameters i have put (i don't know if thay are o.k...) my problem is that the optimization process is taking too long and it's not a complicated system at all, and i am not converging to solution, and the error i got is very large. I need your recommendation what can i do here to make it work?  thank you everyone!

multi layer coating for band pass

hay all i am trying to design a glass substrate with 31 layers of coating of high and low index 1/lambda wave length in order to create a narrow ban pass filter. this design acording to chapter 4 at introduction to optomechanics by Grant R Fowel. i started with matlab and it came out preatty good but after designing in zemax i get compleatly different transmission vs wavelength graph. attached pictures of both graphs matlab and zemax

Sag table output format

Is there a way to tell ZOS the numeric precision I need in the sag table output? Let's say I have an even asphere, specified as 3/ 3(0.5) @550nm, of which I need to generate the sag table.  The irregularity specification tells 550nm/4 = about 140nm. So there's no reason to go below 10nm with numeric precision in the sag table. Therefore I would like, for the sake of legibility and simplicity, to send the manufaturer a sag table with numerical values rounded to the 10nm, or 100nm, or whatever makes sense for my application. In contrast, ZOS always splits angstroms. Thank you a kind regards

Rayleigh Resolution Criteria for PSF

One of my colleagues, Michael Humphreys, wrote an interesting article on the Rayleigh Criterion, so I thought I would post it here :) In perfect geometric optics, a point source is imaged to a perfect point. In order to achieve this perfect imaging, the Exit Pupil has to be infinite in extent. As soon as the Exit Pupil has a finite diameter, diffraction from the edges 'blur' the perfect point into a Point Spread Function. If the finite extent pupil function in the Exit Pupil is circular and perfectly flat (no aberrations) then you will see the traditional Airy disk (mathematically represented by the Bessel function of the first kind of order one). When two point sources are close to each other, there is an angular limit to how close they can be before the individual PSFs blur together and they become unresolvable. This limit is called the Rayleigh Resolution Criteria and occurs when the peak of one PSF falls on the first minima, also known as the Airy Disk, of the second PSF (thi

NSC and Physical Optics Propagation

Hello, I'm trying to simulate a system that focuses a beam with lenses after it reflects off of a DMD. I have made a rudimentary model of a DMD using NSC, but if I try to use POP I get an error message saying that the entrance pupil can't be located. I noticed that most of the posts that come up about POP show setups that are purely sequential. This might be a naive question, but is it not possible to use POP when you have non-sequential components in your system? Or is it because I have my entire system in non-sequential mode, so it doesn't take any of the lenses to be the entrance pupil? Using the regular ray tracing method in non-sequential mode doesn't show any of the expected diffraction from the mirrors, and I don't observe a Fourier transform where I would expect. Multiple detectors and merit function

Dear all, I have a NS system with multiple detectors and 2 design variables. I need a merit function taking the weighted sum of their total power for the 2D universal plot (only 2 different weights). Any idea how to do that? An alternative I've identified is to make a big detector with a mask on top (apertures = small detectors of the first weight), run the 2D univeral plot and then do it again with another large detector and mask for the small detectors of the 2nd weight. Then perform the weighted sum outside of OpticStudio. Still knowing whether it is possible or not to add the total power of multiple detectors as merit function would be valuable, and probably not only to me. Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Surface irregularity: RMS vs no. fringes

Hi all,   In the tolerance wizard the surface irregularity is given by no. of fringes. Some vendors of lens give the surface irregularity in unit of RMS Angstrom. Is there any conversion factor between these two units? If not, is there any other way to overcome this disparnecy?   Thanks a lot, Nadav
