Dear allI am a researcher who is interested in modelling eye optics. We are developing different Zebrafish models to study eye optics. I am trying to use the standard method to model the Zebrafish, and I would ultimately compare different mutant Zebrafish with their eye optics. I was being questioned if ZEMAX (geometric optics) is applicable to the Zebrafish eye due to the relatively small eyes may cause the diffraction limit. Could someone provide advice on this topic?RegardsWilson 

Hi,I have a telescope design (sequential mode) in which I tried to insert a non sequential component. In the attached file the telescope model is OK, and at the end (surface 11), I inserted a NSC component, containing nothing for the moment. I can’t figure out why rays are not entering the NSC component and going through…If anyone can have a look on the attached file, that would be great!Thanks,Julien

Hi, I am doing a non-sequential ray trace of an optical system. I would like to add a second source but let the rays go in opposite direction of the Z-axis. I added a “Source Two Angle”, but it is going in the other direction, i.e. +Z direction. How do i get the rays to go in -Z- direction? Can i change the color of this source to distinguish between the two sources?Many thanks!

There is an option called Ex and Ey irradiance, not sure what this means, but it seems like irradiance output in either x or y coordinate.I understand that it is the electric field (complex) that is being propogated in free space with POP algorithm, but the output is always irradiance, right?Is it possible to retrieve the electric field data by sq root of irradiance ? I am trying to get some clarity on whether the ZBF text file has irradiance or electric field data ? Any help would be very much appreciated. Regards, NC  

Hello all: [1] I was trying do conduct some sensitivity analysis and wanted to apply a Thickness: Pickup solve on surf-8. I have done this many times before, where I choose Pickup solve for thickness for a surface. However, I don’t seem to see that option anymore at all in 2024 R1.02.Has something changed since the last few updates?  [2] Also, Surf-6 is denoted by ‘P’ - Pickup solve - but the drop down menu shows it as a ‘F’ solve but with Pickup properties as one would expect. So I believe this is a bug. 

There are two different approaches to do this. Take Radial Grating as example. Click the tab at the right position of standard surface.  And then  pressed R instead of clicking the standard surface column directly.   Select the surface and click directly and then enter the name you want to search. In our case, it starts with r. This method provides a way to search the surface with certain letter inside the surface name.    

In the UV, CaF2 begins to exhibit small amounts of intrinsic birefringence, which are non-negligible. In Code V there is a very simple way to set up a CaF2 crystal where a crystalline axis is simply established. When a retardance map is calculated for light refracted by such a CaF2 lens, birefringence shows up as “three-point” across the pupil if the light is diverging or converging through a CaF2 crystal with 111 orientation (see https://www.tf.uni-kiel.de/matwis/amat/elmat_en/kap_6/advanced/t6_6_1.html for more details). Or it can show up as a “cross” if the orientation is 001.First of all, I’m not seeing CaF2 as a Birefringent In/Out material option. I understand I would need to define this in the Birefringent catalog. Second, I need to be able to vary the retardance magnitude and orientation depending on the crystal axis orientation and direction of propagation through the crystal. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hi All:I am testplating a zoom lens.   As part of the process after optimization, I  would “Fix” both infinite radius surfaces, as well as the base radius of any a spheres.    In this case the error function is about  ~ERF=0.4966.   However,  when starting the testplating operation, note that the dialogue box recognizes the prior error function of ~ 0.496,  but then estimates an ERF of ~9 Billion, and then Zemax stalls completely

A bug has been identified in the most recent release of OpticStudio, which is causing multiple parameter-solves to be missing from the drop-down menu in many sequential parameters. However, the solves are still accessible. The issue is not in the functionality but rather in the user interface. Temporary Resolution A Users familiar with ZPL macros can easily write a macro using the SOLVETYPE and UPDATE keywords to insert a solve in the desired location. Existing solves can still be modified, and files that are read in with existing solves will keep them. So the macro can create a solve and populate it with values that may then be modified as needed. For users unfamiliar with ZPL programming, a simple macro with descriptions in the body of the macro describing how to populate the arguments is attached here. Hello all,I’m trying to model a multimode fiber with graded index in OpticStudio. I have a known fiber NA of 0.29 and the gradient change across the core can be assumed as parabolic. Then, after the GRIN fiber is properly modeled, I would like to shape the fiber tip into various lenses. Since these are formed by shaping the fiber core, this would also be GRIN.What additional information do I need to model this fiber? What assumptions can be made? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hello! I just wanted to ask, what exactly is the reference wavefront that OpticStudio uses when computing the wavefront error of a system with an off-axis field? I’ve read several posts talking about the reference wavefront, and to my understanding, the reference wavefront for an off-axis field is a sphere with a center that lies on the chief ray, and the sphere intersects the optical axis at the exit pupil plane.I’ve read that the radius of the reference sphere is equal to the distance between the focal plane (image plane) and the exit pupil plane (this number is given by the exit pupil position in Prescription Data, multiplied by -1). However, for off-axis fields, I don’t think this is the case. I think the radius for the reference sphere is the distance between where the chief ray intersects the exit pupil plane and where the chief ray intersects the focal plane. HiI would like to tolerance the aperture value using the tolerance data editor.  I heard you can use TCON.  How do I do that?

ABg scattering seems to describe only scattered rays on "reflective" surfaces in zemax non-sequential mode. Is there an easy way to model a surface that scatters only a fraction of the incident radiation. Any ABg model I apply to a surface seems to include a large specular component I can't seem to control.  

I feel like I should know the answer, but for the life of me I cannot make sense of it. If I create a very simple NSC model consisting of a 1 Watt source reflecting at normal incidence off a flat mirror and then absorbed a by a detector also at normal incidence, the power absorbed by the detector will vary whether I have “Use Polarization” checked or not.  With use polarization, the power is ~0.946 Watts, without it is 1.0 Watts.What gives?I am running an older version of Optics Studio but can upgrade (22.1.2).

Hi All,I am currently working on simulating the Gaussian spot size at various locations within the eye model, such as the cornea, lens, and retina. I have attempted this using both paraxial Gaussian beam analysis and Physical Optics Propagation (POP); however, the calculated values do not align with my theoretical expectations. According to theory, I expect the spot size to be approximately 44 microns at the lens, around 90 microns at the cornea, and roughly 280 microns at the retina. My source has 840nm wavelength. I attached my Zemax file for your reference . Could you please assist me in accurately simulating the Gaussian beam in Zemax to achieve the desired values? Thank you in advance. Regards,Thanigachalam P

Hello there friends from Zemax,  I am trying to import a freeform surface which I externally generate with some custom numerical routine.Since I am interested in performing a non-sequential ray tracing analysis of of my system, I export my surface as a CAD object.I have observed that there are differences in the obtained results depending on which CAD format I use. At the moment I just tested the STL and the STEP fileformats.  My system looks something like this: In this case, I have a point source at the origin. The element right on top of the source is a TIR structure. The surface on the right side is just an aspheric surface which I directly transform from the sequential mode into the non-sequential mode. Finally, the rays are focused towards the focal plane in where I have positioned a small detector to evaluate the intensity at the focal plane. In between both lens elements, I have included a rectangle detector to also evaluate the irradiance. The issue that I am having is related

I cannot for the life of me in the retarded ZEMAX figure out how to do this.  I have 6 CONFIGURATIONS. I want to set THIC on surface to beVariable in configs 1,2,3,and 6. FIXED in 4 and 5.FORM THE MANUAL:Syntax:SETVAR surf, code, status, objectorSETVAR config, M, status, operand So I would use the second version of SETVAR because the “M” says it is for multiple configurations.So where is the surface number in the command?Where is the “T” entered for thickness  Thanks.   

I would like to input into an imager a plano beam that simulates irradiance from a scene at infinity to do some analysis in POP.  So the beam is collimated and in this case fills the imager entrance pupil of 120mm.  It can be monochromatic.  The beam should have a top hat irradiance profile.  The FOV is 4.0 x 7.4 deg full FOV. I don’t believe that I want a guassian with a waist, divergence, etc. Any suggestions? Harvey
