Field Profile (POP) Not Matching with Experiment

Hello Reader, I’m a beginner in using Zemax and would appreciate assistance to resolve an issue of the fieldprofile obtained using Zemax not matching with what we see in the laboratory. The setup is very simple: light exits a fiber (with mode field diameter ~ 5.3 mu-m) and passes through two lenses -- with focal lengths +30 mm and -20 mm (the intention is to test beam-size reduction). [This tutorial was adapted to follow the beam’s path in the ‘Cross-section’ window: Single-mode fiber coupling in OpticStudio – Knowledgebase (zemax.com)]Experimentally, the field profile after the second lens (-20 mm) is perhaps spherically aberrated and is circularly symmetric. It doesn’t quite seem to match the output of the POP (Physical Optics Propagation) module in Zemax. DIffraction in Non-sequential

Could someone explain how OpticStudio handles diffraction when in non-sequential mode? If I have imported STEP files of my mechanical parts and assigned them materials and coatings is there anything else that needs to be done to have diffraction occurring in the analysis? If yes, how best can I analysis the diffraction due to mechanical parts in my system? For context the system currently under analysis is a 2 mirror system with some black painted mechanical parts. Thank you in advance

How to optimize for better lens performance?

I am in the process of optimizing to improve the performance of the lens.My design skills are very poor.My goal is to reduce the RMS radius of 1-10 fields of the lens to near the Airy Radius. And I want to make a lens with MTF (223 lp/mm) 1field:0.7 and 10.0 field:0.4 or better. But there is no further performance improvement.I am currently using the operands of EFFL, TOTR, RAID, RELI, and DIMX. Should I use more operands?What can I do to improve the performance of the lens? Or is the initial design of the lens wrong?I will attach my zemax file.

Folded Ray Tracing

Dear Sir/Madam,I am getting the geometric error when I am running the Ray Trace Tool. Light is going from fiber (illuminating fiber) to Mirror, and after reflection form mirror it is again going back to same fiber(illuminating fiber), I think this is creating error while ray tracing, Is it? I want reflected light in receiving fiber only.I am attaching the screenshot for your reference.  How to overcome this error, please help me out, or else Can I gnore this error?Thank you.

Coordinate consistence after a mirror folder before a black box surface

Hello,I have a question about the 3D layout as follows:As you can see, after adding a mirror, the layout looks wired. I am thinking the reason is because the thickness of the black box is fixed to <80.784> mm, so it’s always a positive number, which causes the inconsistence of the coordinate system after a folding mirror. How can I change it or modify the settings to have a consistent optical ray tracing path?Thanks!

How can I calculate the resolution for a mirrors system ?

Goodmorning everyone.I’m a new user of  Zemax.I have a simple mirror system composed by two elements: the first is flat while the second spherical or parabolic. The object is set at 3400mm from the pinhole and it is 1180 mm x 1180 mm. The system works in visible range.Link files Can you suggest a way to define the resolution of the system or suggest papers or discussion about this topic ?

How to optimize correctly?

I'm practicing optimization using a few operands.The lens performance deteriorates significantly after optimization than before optimization.I will attach the zemax file and PPT file.Please understand that this is an old zemax version. How can I make the optimization process go well?I don't know what my fault is.Please help. Thanks

How to put the interferogram zernike data to zemax and show up with wavefront map?

Zernike terms are same as below images then put the zernike terms like below… Not only the zernike fringe phase but fringe sag, standard phase, standard sag... and I wanna to show up as wavefront map same as the what measured as interferometer. But, …WTF...   Nothing match or looks similar with the interferogram…??What is wrong??

Wide Angle Lenses Tutorial

Hi, I’m getting started writing a video on Wide Angle Lenses for my YouTube Channel DesignOpticsFast. I have a couple of questions:For Zemax Support:I’m having trouble getting the ‘enhanced wide angle ray aiming’ to make any difference: What does it do? I’ve toggled all the (new) switches under Ray Aiming in System Explorer and I’ve not been able to see any changes at all, let alone improvements. Can you guys explain where and when this Feature Experiment is intended to be useful? Or offer some sample files that show what it can do?Also, I wanted to check that the Performance Test measures raytracing speed AFTER the ray-aiming, so it won’t be a useful guide to how well or badly the ray-aiming is going. Is that correct?For Zemax Community:I’m interested in problems that you have in designing wide angle lenses. Updating Merit Function does not terminate

Dear Zemax team,I have added a genc function into my Merit Function, maybe with some wrong parameter. Now the update of the Merit Function does not terminate (after several minutes) anymore. I have pressed the Terminate button next to Updating merit Function, but the text box with Updating Merit Function stays. I am practically locked out. I have already terminated Zemax, but when I restart and recover the file Zemax gets stuck in updating Merit Function as soon as I open the Merit Function editor.Do you have any idea how to suppress the automatic update of the Merit Function, so that I can change the genc parameter? Or to edit the Merit Function outside Zemax? Or how to terminate the Merit Function update? Many thanksMarkus

Diffraction Enclosed Energy out of focus

Dear Zemax Team,can Diffraction Enclosed Energy be used on any surface in the optical system, or only on the image plane or in a focus plane?I use Diffraction Enclosed Energy on IMA (focussed Airy pattern) and on a plane a few millimeters before IMA (here some other distribution). From geometric considerations, the spot size should be in IMA about 8um and about 150um in the other plane. This is also confirmed by Geometric Encircled Energy. However, Diffraction Enclosed Energy plots the same results for both planes (8um spot size).Maybe you can give me a hint on this?Many thanksMarkus

Different results of image size When calculating the same system of Zemax in Matlab

Dear community,I’m working on a system that contains a simple SV lens and a human eye model (taken from Zemax library, with small changes).A co-worker wrote a code in Matlab with the exact same system and we wanted to compare the images sizes that was received on  the retina.We’re receiving a huge difference (two orders difference) between the result from Zemax and the results from Matlab, and we suspect that something in the Zemax system is wrong, or the calculation in Zemax may be wrong.  I’m attaching my Zemax system, hoping someone here could help me understand if I did something wrong. Also the value of the image size that we received from Matlab is: 3.58 x10^-1 µm both in X and Y direction Thank you

Coating file for Germanium in LWIR

I am designing a lens assembly in LWIR with germanium and other IR materials like Gasir, ZnSe and Zns. I want to light transmission and other analysis which requires AR coating (as the bare materials reflects more). I didn’t find a suitable Coating file in zemax coating catalog? Is anyone can suggest how to do the analysis in opticstuido or where can I find the AR coating file? Kindly help in doing the analysis

Easiest way to scale x-axis values in MTF plots?

What I’m really trying to do is show the MTF in object space (what I would get if I reversed the lens and plotted MTF).  I believe all I need to do is scale the cycles/mm axis by the magnification.  Not sure how to do that without exporting the data to some other application.  Can it be done in ZPL alone?

How to model stacked holograms in Zemax non-sequential mode?

Hi all,I am wondering if it is possible to model the stacked holograms in which each hologram has its own construction wavelength and sensitive angles like the Figure 1(each color represents different holograms and their corresponding incident and diffracted light beam) shown below? I have tried to make one model in Zemax non-sequential mode(the file attached below), however, it doesn’t work as I expected. I am really appreciated for any help or comments! Thank you!--Kaden

Help Designing an Acousto-Optic Modulator (AOM)

Hi everyone!I’m new to Zemax and this community and I hope someone here can help!I am trying to design an Acousto-Optic Modulator for an experiment in our lab. The idea was to model a rectangular volume with a grating in the center that would output different orders of light where the output angles of each order are dependent on laser wavelength, crystal index of refraction, and wavelength of acoustics. I believe I can create a script that varies each of those parameters through the integrated programming functions. What I’m not sure about is how to go about modelling this. Does Zemax have any built in models for this or has anyone tried this before? I’m assuming sequential mode is the way to go, but if not, please enlighten me. Any help would be much appreciated. -Michael

Analyzing field of view in biocular systems tab -> displaying error

Hello everyone,I am trying to measure my model’s Field of View in sequential mode. My model involves reflective surfaces , absorbing surfaces and Transparent surfaces, the function of this model is to view surrounding. In Analyzing tab → biocular systems →  field of view: I can not display any reasonable value. Can you help me out with this?

How to optimize lens design?

I am studying lens design. I want to design a simple mobile lens.But I don't know how to do it.Through various papers, I learned that the patented lens is modified to design the desired lens.So I searched for a patent related to the mobile lens, but there is no design method.Any tips on lens design? When I go through optimization, I get very strange lens geometry. There is no one around to teach me.I have basic knowledge about how to use zemax.I am a current student and want to work as an optical design researcher, but my skills are lacking.

TAPR - Cosine taper factor

If I have a radius of curvature R = 0.865” and a surface semi-diameter of 0.75” and I apply a TAPR decenter DY of 0.25”, I’ll get a range of r going from -1.0” to 0.5”, which then gives sin(alpha) = abs(-1/0.865) = 1.156.  Taking the asin of this gives me an error (in Excel).  Am I doing this correctly?  (All “x” components are “0” for this question, e.g. no DX involved).  Thanks.Alex

Feature request: add comment to cell

Sometimes it is difficult to rememeber how to use a complex file, both in sequential and non sequential modes. My request is to be able to add a comment to each cell of the Zemax spreadsheet, similar to the comments to Microsoft Excel cells. This would help a lot in commenting the file, like comments in a program script. For example, the role of a particular variable or of a pickup could be explained.Thank you

flye´s eye array with concave curvature between single elements

 Hi everyone,I want to do a Flye´s  Eye simulation with a non-ideal array of orthogonal lenses.The ideal shape as it is provided as zemax object has 0 curvature between the lenses.What I want to simulate looks like this (concave curvatures between single elements - see document attached).Since I did not found a way to design such an object with my CAD program, I would like to know if it would be possible to create it with OS. Thanks in advance.Stefan
