When to use cenx\ceny vs cnpx\cnpy

these operands appear to return the same information. is the only difference one set is for a specific field (cenx\ceny) whereas one set is for an arbitrary field (cnpx\cnpy) or am I missing something else?

Looks like that’s the case.  CENX/CENY are for any of the defined system fields, while CNPX/CNPY are for any (Hx, Hy).
