Abstract:

Zemax recently launched new updates for OpticStudio, OpticStudio STAR Module, and OpticsBuilder. OpticStudio 22.1 starts the year by improving algorithms for wide-angle system design, ray aiming improvements, and native non-sequential diffraction analyses. OpticStudio STAR Module enables multi-wavelength simultaneous FEA fitting support and adds useful new Thermal Index Plot and FEA Data Viewer visualization tools. OpticsBuilder features enhanced Creo support and new tools for streamlining and visualizing Advanced Ray analysis. In this webinar, Tom Pickering, Esteban Carbajal, and Lisa Clauson will review the new features included in this release and demonstrate how these new features work within the software.

The webinar hasn’t happened yet, but one of the OpticStudio updates is a Ray Aiming Wizard, which is currently a feature experiment. We have a thread open for feedback about the Ray Aiming Wizard here on the community, so for those early adopters, let us know what’s working well and where we can improve this tool.

@Chris.Svec

Q:  Are there any plans for OpticsBuilder support for Nx?

A: Now that Zemax is an Ansys company we have started planning for the future of OpticsBuilder! We are not yet ready to share what will be next but I encourage you to watch the Ansys space for updates.

@Alberto.Donazzan

Q: Are you planning to implement Enhanced Ray Aiming for non-rotationally symmetric system in the next future?

A: Yes, we are currently working on improving the Enhanced Ray Aiming algorithm to support more optical systems, specifically non-rotationally symmetric systems. If you have any files or designs which currently have issues with ray aiming, please send them to support@zemax.com. We can then include those files in our tests.

@bill.g.zhang

Q: Does it take longer to trace rays when new ray aiming features are used?

A: In our tests, Enhanced Ray Aiming (ERA) is usually much faster than Robust Ray Aiming (RRA). However,  please note that it could be slower than “plain” Ray Aiming. For traditional systems, plain Ray Aiming is probably just as good. But for wide-angle systems, you will need to use ERA.

@Lucas (Luke).Woodard

Q: Will Enhanced Ray Aiming eventually support Real Image Height fields?

A: We are currently working on improving the Enhanced Ray Aiming algorithm to support more field and aperture types. If you have any files or designs which currently have issues with ray aiming, please send them to support@zemax.com. We can then include those files in our tests.

Q: In the updated surface relief grating DLLs using RCWA, do diffractive lenses refer to metalenses?

A: Yes, I would say so. Most diffractive optical elements (DOE) and metalenses consist of a periodic structure and can be handled by RCWA DLLs. I suggest you check out this article for more information: How to design DOE lens or metalens in OpticStudio
