Please can someone at Zemax stop Universal Plots doing an unnecessary recalculation when you switch between the Graph tab and the Text tab. Universal Plots are used for carrying out multiple calculations and some of mine take a long time to generate. Zemax shouldn’t need to do a recalculation to show you the values it used to generate the graph when you select the Text tab, after all nothing has changed. It is just a waste of my time waiting 15 minutes or more just to access the data values.
Can anyone tell me what the C:/ProgramData/Zemax folder is used for? It seems to have duplicates of all the folders in the Users Documents Zemax folder. It is not a left over from an old install because to get rid of all the clutter from 7 years of updates I have just resorted to a clean install and I deleted it as it was left behind after uninstalling Zemax. After a clean install it has appeared again! Also apparently every time you do an update Zemax has to copy data over to it but it seems to just be clutter taking up hard disk space. That is not the only needless duplication, there are three locations you could put a DLL, there is a DLL folder in the aforementioned ProgramData/Zemax folder, there is another in Program Files/Zemax OpticStudio and yet another in the Users/Documents/Zemax folder. Why does Zemax need to have three of them? It is confusing to say the least and needless duplication is just plane bad programming! Andrew
Please can Zemax change the way it installs updates. I don't know of any other software that installs updates as a new application and leaves behind clutter like this (16 separate instances are listed in my app list). And of course the list just keeps getting longer with every update Zemax brings out. Is it safe to delet the old versions? If it is then it shouldn't be left to the user to clear up Zemax's mess, it should be done automatically at the end of an update installation . If it isn't then you should change it so that there is only one app listed and ensure it isn't taking up unnecessary storage space. As it stands it doesn't give me with confidence that OpticStudio isn't going to crash my system at some point. Andrew
OpticStudio only supports CAD models created in Version 4 of Creo. Creo V4 is 5 years old and the latest version of Creo is now Version 8. Isn’t it about time that the development team updated Zemax to work with newer versions? Andrew
The IES TM25 standard for ray files has been out for years but we are still waiting for Zemax to allow these files to be imported in to optical models. Osram only provides ray files bigger than 10M rays for its LEDs in TM25 format so it is definitely needed and its hard to understand why there has been such a delay. Having read the TM25 standard it would take very little development time to implement. Andrew
One of the big short comings of Zemax display window is that you can’t display Isolux lines (or any other contour Iso line such as Candela). IsoLux lines are used in a variety of different industries from Automotive to Street Lighting to show areas meeting a given illumination level but for some reason Zemax think they are either not needed or too difficult to implement. At the moment I have a display window that in False Colour just looks like it is 90% yellow/green and I need to show my customer the area that will have greater than his specified minimum lux level. Can anyone recommend a free (or cheap) graphics package that can take the text output from the display window and show IsoLux lines? Thanks,Andrew
Why does OpticStudio label results for Luminous Intensity using units of Lumens/Steradian when you set the Source Units to Lumens? I don't know anyone or any specification that wouldn't use Candela as the title for the units of Luminous Intensity if working with Photometric units. On graphs of Luminous Intensity from the analysis of Polar Detectors I always have to change the Y axis title to Candela but can't change the Peak Intensity value unit which is always labelled as Lumens/Steradian. I have to send these graphs out to customers who have specifications that are always given in Candela and not all of them are technically aware that Lumens/Steradian is the same as Candela. Please can you at least give users the opportunity to change the Peak Intensity units so that the match the Y axis title. Even better Candela should be the default Luminous Intensity unit and if users want to revert to Lumens/Steradian they sh
