How many lenses to have in my optical imaging system ? How do I calculate the number of lens elements required and what type of lens (convex or concave ) to be used?

Lets say I am designing a lesn system, I know the sensor specifications, FOV, F/#, . I also know the max diameter and length of the system allowed. Then how would I figure out how many lenses to add in the given system to get sharp and less distorted image.
