Is there a way to consider/optimize flare/glare in merit function for lens design?

Besides MTF, RI, etc., I wonder how I can minimize flare/glare for an imaging lens design. Ideally somehow optimize it using merit functions? Thanks.

Yes there is: GPIM.

Use the Ghost Focus Generator tool and get comfortable with what it does. GPIM can find the nearest ghost image and ghost pupil, and optimize it to be a long distance from the image surface. During the optimization it automatically updates so as the ‘nearest’ ghost changes so does the targeting. It’s a really cool operand.
