Webinar details:

Register here: [The event has concluded]

Date: Thursday, March 24th

Time: 6:00am PST & 11:00am PST

Presenters:

Tom Pickering, Manager Product Management for Ansys Zemax
James Pond, Principle Product Manager for Ansys Lumerical

Abstract:

Optical design has long been constrained by the lack of being able to design the optics and photonic components in one workflow. This webinar explores how the new connection between Ansys Zemax and Ansys Lumerical accelerates optical design time today and in the future. We will showcase some example workflows that combine your optical simulations with other Ansys solutions such as Ansys Speos and Ansys optiSLang to deliver streamlined comprehensive results.

Q: Hi. I need to connect Lumerical and Zemax in non-sequential mode. I need to make this in both directions Zemax to Lumerical and visa versa.  / How to send rays back from Zemax to Lumerical without POP

A: This may be require some follow-up discussion to understand your needs. For example, are you thinking of (a) an active link between Zemax and Lumerical so that a Lumerical simulation could be invoked for each incident ray on a surface or (b) an iterative approach that involves a full ray tracing calculation, followed by some Lumerical calculations to recalculate a rayset or the scattering properties of a surface?

Q: How would you compare Zemax and SPEOS capabilities to model optical heart rate sensor light paths inside skin tissue?  / Can you combine different simulation software for an integrated multiphysics simulation system like optoelectronic component features (e.g. detector noise) with optical modelling (e.g. signal strength between LED and photodetector)?

A: I’m not quite sure how to answer this question. Are you experiencing any pains with this workflow in OpticStudio? Speos can be more valuable for advanced sequence analysis. But in any case, OpticStudio is still required to optimize the lens design. Speos will add value for system validation with some variation management.

Q: Does the handover as Black Box from Zemax to Speos mean that the stop surface of the imaging system has to be located outside the system to be analyzed, since Zemax Black Boxes don't allow an included stop surface?

A: That is correct. However, we will soon be releasing a new tool built into OpticStudio with which you will be able to directly export a Speos Reduced Order Model to include in your system analysis in Speos.

Q: Does Zemax OpticStudio version from 2019 support to be used with Lumerical?

A: This depends on which integration you mean. The ability to ready/write ZBF files, for example, is available in Lumerical and can be used with any OpticStudio version that supports reading ZBF files. However, some of the work we showed is under active R&D and will require the latest versions of both Ansys Lumerical and Ansys Zemax products.

Q: What package covers the analysis of thin films and coatings?

A: For thin films and coatings, please take a look at Lumerical's STACK solver (https://support.lumerical.com/hc/en-us/articles/360034914653), and there is a list of starting examples here: https://support.lumerical.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037226394-STACK-Product-Reference-Manual

Q: What package covers the optical simulation for MEMS based sensor interrogation such as Circulator, WDM, coupler, isolator, spectrum analyser, Fabry Perot cavities and interferometers? / can Lumerical be used for photon flux measurements and modelling?

A: I would recommend looking at the Application Gallery here: https://support.lumerical.com/hc/en-us#app-anchor. There is a search tool and you can quickly find examples about most of the things you are asking about, to see if the software is appropriate for your needs. For example in WDM, we simulate both the individual components/filters that can be used (such as ring waveguide filters), as well as WDM circuits and systems with our INTERCONNECT product.

Q: Can you please share the Lumerical and OpticStudio example files with us that were used in the PC fiber to fiber coupling model? A website link would be very helpful.

A: If you go to the Ansys Lumerical Application Gallery here: https://support.lumerical.com/hc/en-us#app-anchor and search for Zemax, you will find all the examples that are available online. The fiber coupling one is not online currently, but it was part of a joint workshop we offered and we could find the files for you. If you’d like please get in contact with us.

Q: With Zemax joined Ansys, what will happen to Ansys Speos module? / can you be more specific on what SPEOS can do on the system level that Zemax cannot? Thanks.

A: Speos remains a separate product integrated on 3D platforms to handle any CAD geometry. What can Speos can do better than Zemax ?

  • Environmental factors (e.g. fog), scenario analysis, faster simulation thanks to Speos Lens System, HPC & GPU compatibility, and it can handle more complex CAD data
  • Advanced tools for straylight analysis to interactively reverse-identify root cause of a defect.

Q: For interaction between Lumerical and Zemax, how to convert the electric field calculated by Lumerical to ray directions for Zemax?

A: The electric field to ray directions is done through a near to far field transformation. The projection to the very far field is essentially a projection to k-space, which gives us the ray directions (and polarizations) from the near field. Here is a link with some more details: https://support.lumerical.com/hc/en-us/articles/360034914713-Far-field-projections-in-FDTD-overview

Q: Do you have any chart to display comparison multi-physics design and simulation between ZEMAX/Ansys compared to Comsol?

A: Could you please provide more details here? For example, are you looking at STOP analysis with Comsol and their ray tracing package, or are you looking at other multiphysics effects such as charge/heat transport in wavelength scale photonic devices? I think if you could tell us more about what problem you are trying to solve we could comment further.
