How to create an input beam with different x and y divergence

Hi Everyone,

I am struggling with creating an input beam that has different x and y divergence. The beam located at object space is elliptical and diverging very fast in one direction and slowly in the other. Is it possible to use object space NA and vignetting to realize?

Thank you so much!

Di

Hi Di,

Vignetting factors will only change the shape of XY the pupil, not the LM angular distribution of the rays.

The easiest way is to use a field at infinity and then use a Paraxial XY surface with the corresponding Power X and Power Y for your different divergence.  However, this does not truly represent a diverging laser beam; this only represents the far field of the beam.

I would suggest looking at Paul Colbourne’s solution for using skewed rays to represent a TEM00 Gaussian beam.

You can change the X Waist and Y Waist independently with analysis like Skew Gaussian Beam and Physical Optics Propagation (these analyses don’t rely on the System Explore > Aperture settings).

Thank you very much, Michael, for your explanation and recommendation!
