Find the best phase distribution on a surface to minimize the wavefront error on the image plane?

I'm a new user of Zemax. I have question:

I want to insert a phase surface in the system which can be specified by Zernike coefficients. I want to find the best  Zernike coefficients for that surface so that I can achieve minimum wavefront error on the image plane. Is there an optimization operand in the merit function that I can use directly? And which kind of phase surface that I should use?

Use a Zernike Phase surface, and just the standard RMS Wavefront merit function.

You could also just measure the Zernike coefficients and then add them to a Zernike phase surface at a pupil plane. See https://my.zemax.com/en-US/Knowledge-Base/kb-article/?ka=KA-01392 for an example. This method only works if the phase surface is at a pupil plane, the first method will work for any surface. You will need a Zernike phase surface for each wavelength and field position, of course.
