Zemax-er Spotlight: Luca Cellerino

This month, we are featuring Luca Cellerino (@Luca.cellerino). Luca is a very active user of our community and has been discussing topics around color and luminance performance on the forum.

To learn more about Luca’s background and experience in the industry, click Show content below.

→ Tell us about yourself and your company

I have been working in the R&D department of an electromechanical company for about 25 years. The company is part of the Bitron group and is engaged in various sectors in addition to the automotive sector such as household appliances, air treatment, energy distribution, etc. I deal with the validation of systems called "visible switches" with respect to customer requirements. The simulations are mainly about color and luminance performance.

→ What in the industry are you excited about?

I love the daily challenges and innovation of this sector.

If you could offer one piece of advice to someone using OpticStudio, what would it be?

I would have liked to learn more about the optimization algorithm, I later discovered its potential.

→ What's the most challenging problem you've addressed with the help of OpticStudio?

In general, the light guides are the most challenging part and OS solves them in an excellent way.

→ What topics are you looking forward to discussing with your fellow Community members?

One of the problems I face every day is the rendering of environments, the need to represent the application environment of the optical system in a real way is gaining ground, for example vehicle ambient lights or surface-shaped color detectors. How did colleagues solve?

→ What do you enjoy most about the Zemax Community/forums?

I like the community's applied experience and quick responses.

The Community in Review

Featured Community Posts

Did you know that some of our most active forum users are former Zemax employees? We are so happy to see them continuing to share their knowledge on our Community. This month,@David.Nguyen (former ACE team member) and@MichaelH (former R&D/Product team member) used their expertise to create the posts below. Check it out!

  • User @MichaelH is showing how tweak the sample files to use the modern version of PythonNET as the latest versions of PythonNET contains some change to the way inheritance works.  PythonNET is now more in line with C# where you have to use the proper static variable type.

Ask An Engineer: Tolerance analysis on Binary 2 diffractive surfaces

Every month, the Ansys ACE team looks for forum posts that can be answered in a quick video. In general, we are searching for lingering un-answered questions, but may also respond to questions we deem as good “FAQs”. If you have a question you think we should take a look at, let us know in the comments below.

This month, Senior Application Engineer Yuan Chen responded to the following thread:

Code Exchange Latest Editions

  • @Michael Chenghas has written a user extension that acts like a “wizard”. It is meant to help users set DLL parameters for example when working with grating data for Lumerical DLL. The tool is mainly useful when we need to set up multiple objects and parameters.

Chinese Forum: Popular Topics

Ansys ACE member @yuan.chen created a forum post which shows how to calculate the FWHM of Huygens PSF. Take a look here:

Japanese Forum: Popular Topics

Ansys ACE member @Ryosuke.Niitsu  shared how to use the OpticStuido to optimize the "white". For lighting applications, different combinations of RGB can produce various color temperatures of white, and OpticStudio can simply calculate how to combine RGB to calculate the desired color temperature of the design.

Knowledgebase Updates

Our APAC team is constantly working on translating Knowledgebase content into our supported languages. The Japanese and Chinese language Knowledgebase has recently been updated with the following:

Teich and translated by@Haosheng Hu

  • LumericalとOpticStudio間でシミュレーションを変換する方法 by@Sahil and translated by@Kensuke.Hiraka and@Takashi Matsumoto

Ansys Optics Application Gallery

In this new section of the Community Newsletter, we will be featuring the work of the Ansys Optics ACE team. The team is constantly creating new and exciting tutorials and workflows which are then published to the Ansys Optics Application Gallery. The Gallery features content from all of our optical tools and beyond with the express goal of showing users how to use our simulation tools for any application.

This month we are spotlighting:

Metalens – Ansys Optics

  • The goal of this example is to design a diffractive metalens consisting of cylindrical nanorods. The radius and the arrangement of the nanorods are tailored to create a desired phase profile on the metalens surface. The design is verified in Ansys FDTD, RCWA (Rigorous Coupled-Wave Analysis) and OpticStudio through near- and far-field analyses.
