I'd like to understand better what is the thermal analysis function in OpticStudio typically used for, i.e. what kind of applications would make use of the uniform thermal expansion capabilities that is offered in OpticStudio.

A typical application using the thermal analysis tools in OpticStudio to athermalize an optical system is discussed in the following Knowledgebase Article:

The thermal analysis is used to determine the change in performance of the optical system due to the change in refractive indices of the lenses and thermal expansion/contraction of the optics and mounts.
