Hello all,

I’ve been working on a magnifying lens design, and I find the MTF is good but the ray fan and the spot diagram are not that good. If I trust the MTF result, the lens design is finished, but if I trust the ray fan and spot diagram result , the design still needs further optimization. What should I do next?

To my eye your design looks good.  The MTF curves are very close to being diffraction limited.  Looks like the marginal rays around the edge of the pupil are the primary contributors to aberration.  How do the fans and spot diagrams look if you simply stop the existing lens down just a little bit?

Thanks , Jeff.

Look at your encircled/ensquared energy as well, and you’ll see that your lens is in good shape.  Although the ray fans show whiptails at their ends, they aren’t very wide, and thus don’t contribute that much out-of-focus energy to your PSF.  Trust MTF and EE diffraction analysis first; spots, ray fans, etc. are good diagnostics but aren’t representative when aberrations are as low as your MTF curve shows.

Hello ,

I was told to delete the layout of this design by my supervisor, how can I modify this post?

Hi @steven.Ou -

I have removed your screenshot for now. You can modify your post or re-add your other screenshots by hovering over the three dots on the post and clicking Edit, as shown below:
