simulating a cylindrical aspheric lens

Hello,i want to simulate a cylindrical aspheric lens in zemax.i tried with toroidle lens but ir didnt work for me because i need the lens to have 0 power on x axis.does anyone have an idea on how to simulate that type of lenses in opticstudio ??Thanks

Simulating the spot size of a focused fiber output

I'm working on a system where a beam is launched from a multi-mode fibre (having a certain core diameter and NA), goes through a series of lenses, and is then focused on the image surface. What would be the best way to simulate such a source in sequential mode? What would be the best way to find the resultant spot size on the image surface?

What is the difference between the Global and Hammer Optimization options?

When it comes to optimizing a system, there are a couple different options. Global and Hammer Optimization are the two global techniques available in OpticStudio, located under the Optimize tab. These two algorithms differ most prominently in the scope of their search. Global optimization is great if you are looking to explore possible design forms. It searches more broadly over all the parameters, saving the 10 best solutions for you. Hammer optimization, on the other hand, is more useful for improving a design you already have. It searches for similar designs that have lower merit functions. However, it does not search on as large of a scale as the Global Search. In many projects, it will likely help for you to use both! Generally, Global optimization would be used in the early stages of the project as you test out the design space, followed by some local optimization, and finally Hammer optimization to more thoroughly improve your design.

Sequential cylindrical lens

I am a graduate who has only just started using non-sequential Zemax in the last few weeks and now I am moving on to using sequential Zemax. I am hoping to gain a little bit of guidance on how to make the model that I need. I am modelling a collimated beam upon a cylindrical lens and looking at the line of spots created in the image plane. I am hoping to analyse the spot size and distortion created in the image plane as I vary the tilt and height of the field on the lens. Some guidance on how best to do this in sequential Zemax would be great.

Straylight in VR Pancake

For a pancake type of VR, most of the straylight issue comes from the imperfect polarizer model. Here we have provided an example that users can play with for investigation.The components in the system are as below.In the polarizer (object #6), users can control the light leakage at reflection and transmission side. New Optimization Methods

Hi Zemax Team, I was pleased to see the new optimization routines in 21.1, but I have not yet succeeded in getting a better result (either in MF value or speed) with them than with the DLS optimizer. For example, in a typical imaging system design, optimizing for best RMS spot, I have a design with a starting MF of 0.02 with 12 variables, all thicknesses and radii. The results I get are: DLS: 0.0011 in 1.7 secs DLSx 0.0035 in 3.6 secs PSD 0.0035 in 3.6 secs For reference, Orthogonal Descent (which I know is not intended for this kind of optimization) gave 0.0037 in 2.9 secs. Can you give us some color on what kind of optimization problems these new algorithms are intended for? - Mark

Nonsequential Mode: Coherent Optics, Problem with Detector rectangle and NSDC Operand

Hello, I have a very simple nonsequential model: Source Point: power=10 W, coherence length=0, linear polarized: Jx=Jy=1, collimated light: cone angle=0 Detector rectangle: placed behind source, normal incidence, number of pixels=1, polarization=2 for measuring power of y-polarized light Then I have a merit function: NSDD for clearing the detector NSTR for making the rey trace NSDC for measuring nonsquential coherent data I was expecting to get Ey (y-component of the E-field vector), if I take Pix=0, Data=2 as parameters for NSDC. But I got 1,581 as result. From my understanding the result should be Sqrt(10)*cos(45°)=2,236. What's wrong here? If I take Pix=0, Data=3 as parameters for NSDC I get 2,5 as result. Data=3 should calculate the power. Because power is proportional to amplitude of E-Field vector and 1,581^2=2,5 this is consistent. But according to Malus Law I was expecting to get 10W * (cos(45°))^2 = 5W. I would be very happy if someone can help me clarifying this

Relation between RMS Spot Radius and Beam Size

Hi everyone,  I got the following, most simple setup consisting of only the gaussian beam source and a rectangular detector.With a beam size of 0.15mm I expected to see the same as RMS Spot Radius on the detector viewer. But the detector displays RMS Spot Radius 0,10606mm which is 1/sqrt(2) of the given beam size.  The beam size radius is where the residual intensity account for 13.5% of the peak intensity. It should therefore be identical to the RMS Spot Radius.I just can’t wrap my head around as why the RMS Spot Radius is 1/sqrt(2) of the beam size, can anyone explain?Is there a relation between RMS Spot Radius and Gaussian beam size that I am missing?Sincerely, Zu

How to define the ray tracing coordinate (Hx,Hy,Px,Py)?

Laser Diode Astigmatism

For modelling laser diodes via 'source diode' the value of astigmatism matters. Data sheet of laser diodes typically don't show this value. I tried to derive this value from far field beam divergence in the slow axis plane. Slow-axis divergence @1/e2 points is typically slightly bigger than the FWHM value. Using far field divergence equation one derives the beam waist and using the beam diameter-as-a-function-of-distance 'z' equation one can back calculate the 'z' necessary to get the beam diameter equal to the emitting chip length (not cavity length) e.g. 50µm.. I am not sure if this is correct. Any other suggestion/experience would be welcome. I was also never sure if the source diode inputs 'X-divergence' and 'Y-divergence' (in fact 0.85 x FWHM values) refer to full angle or half-angle. Thanks, Dusan

Simulation of optical fiber bundle in sequential mode

I have an optical fiber bundle with core diameter 910 microns and NA = 0.22 and I would like to make the source as the optical fiber output end with rays coming out of this fiber. The objective of this simulation is to get a collimated rays at the image plane by using a collimating lens. Since I am using a fiber bundle the rays from the farthest point cannot be collimated easily so there would some losses and I need to find how much is overall efficiency of this system.My question is can I design the fiber output end by providing as many fields points to represent the fiber bundle and assume each point emits a cone of light with NA = 0.22. If not how can I model the fiber end as a source?

Hello, Could you tell me how the extended source encircled energy calculation works? And also how the 'multiply by diffraction limit' applies to the calculation?   Also, how does the 'multiply by diffraction limit' compare to the calculation: 'diffraction encircled energy'? I calculate both and I am wondering why they are different. thank you

Prescription Data explanation about Object space NA

Hi everyone,I got the Object Space NA of our system from Prescription Data, and try use it to calculate resolution with resolution formula (lambda/(2*N.A.)). However, it is off a lot. Missed Surface Error Message - Possible Solution Proposed

Hello Everyone, On some occasions this error message might come across during my sequential studies. I recently figured out that while I get this error message (the aperture, in this case F/#) I can fix this error by increasing the  F/#. By changing the aperture to some certain limit of light fully accepted I jump into a result that this error messsage can be overcome by this manner.Having comments on this thread is welcomed.Best regards,

DIffraction in Non-sequential

Could someone explain how OpticStudio handles diffraction when in non-sequential mode? If I have imported STEP files of my mechanical parts and assigned them materials and coatings is there anything else that needs to be done to have diffraction occurring in the analysis? If yes, how best can I analysis the diffraction due to mechanical parts in my system? For context the system currently under analysis is a 2 mirror system with some black painted mechanical parts. Thank you in advance

How to insert a reflective diffraction grating

Hello. I'm trying to simulate a simple imaging system in non sequential mode. My setup consists in a source radial, a 4f telescope, a 1200 lines/mm diffraction grating and a detector color. I would like to insert a reflective grating, but I can't seem to find a way to do it. I was only able to insert a transmission grating by choosing a Diffraction Grating from the Object Type menu. I tried changing the parameters in the Object Properties, varying the 'Diffraction' settings: I selected 'Split by table below', in the 'split' section and set 'Start order:0 , Stop Order:1'. Then, on the 'Reflect' section, I set 0.5 for both orders and left 0 in the 'Transmit' section. I'm going to post a snapshot of this menu. Anyway, nothing of this worked, so instead of 'Split by table below', I chose 'Split by DLL function'. In the DLL section I selected the diff_samp_1.DLL , but for any parameter I insert, the grating still keeps working in transmissive mode.

Removing spherical aberration from optimization

I followed the Zemax tutorial for how to optimize a simple lens in OpticStudio.What I would like to do is create a lens for collimating a beam but which is optimized to reduce higher order aberrations. I don’t want to worry about spherical aberration, because we can reposition the fiber to different distances at different angles.I’m not sure how to configure such a thing given the optimization wizard shown in the tutorial. Is there an easy way to specify this is what I want to do so the optimizer knows that?

Which operand I can use to fix focal length while optimizing lens in non-sequential mode?

Hi, I am trying to optimize a lens in NSC. Given by our limitation, I need to keep the focal length while optimizing the thickness, radius and other properties. In sequential mode, EFFL could work. However, I cannot find the corresponding operand in NSC mode. Does anyone know how to do it? Many thanks!

Flat field concave gratings simulation

Hello,I am currently trying to use a flat-field concave-gratings in an optical spectrometer setup.The latter has improved shape and design so that the grooves are neither parallel nor equidistant. The main purpose is to minimize astigmatism and coma.(typically: https://www.ssioptics.com/product-category/diffraction-gratings/flat-field-concave-gratings/)I am wondering which procedure I should follow in Zemax to create this type of Grating shape and/or if anybody else worked using this king of gratings using Zemax?I am working in sequential mode since it is the one which I am feeling the most confortable with. I used the surface type diffractive grating to create my gratings combined with a concave curvature. However I am quite sure it is not the best way to simulate it, and I will certainly not have a proper estimation of my astigmatism and coma.I am open to invest time to learn non-sequential mode if it is needed.Thanks a lot in advance for your help and suggestions!

How to use optimization function to collimate light in NSC mode?

Hi all, I would like to test a variety of lenses in a 2-lens Keplarian beam reductor. What is the best way to optimize this design to get the BEST collimation with the pair of lenses? I have used the optimization wizard with a variable Z-axis distance. The criteria settings are attached. Occasionally, the optimization function does not change the Z distance of the second lens even after I put it in an incorrect Z-position. Can someone please advise? Thanks!
