Dear OpticStudio Users,

We have identified a significant issue in the 2025 R1 release affecting ZOS-API tools. Specifically, any ZOS-API tool designed to read ZRD (Zemax Ray Database) files is currently not functioning as intended.

Issue Details:

  • Symptom: ZOS-API tools that read ZRD files fail to work properly.

  • Impact: Users relying on ZOS-API for tasks involving ZRD data will encounter errors or unexpected behavior.

We understand the critical role these tools play in automating workflows and analyzing ray data, and we are actively working on a fix. Updates will be provided as soon as a resolution is available.

In the meantime, if you encounter this issue, please reach out to our support team for assistance or share your experiences in the comments below.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience as we address this problem.

Best regards,
Tom Pickering

Thomas,

Has any progress been made on this problem? A colleague and I are both actively working on this. We want to mine ZRD files for OPL-LU data to compute time-of-flight information from non-sequential simulations.

My colleague is using 2025 R1 and I’m using 2024 R1. We both have the same problem, that OPL-LU appears as a column of data in the nonsequential Ray Database Viewer, and the data makes physical sense. But when we try to parse the data out of the same ZRD files that we view in the Viewer, we get nonsense.

Meanwhile the ZRD file format documentation has no reference to the two OPLs, OPL-W and OPL-LU.

Can you just send me a document that articulates new file format for the ZRD file? And then we can modify the API file reader scripts for ourselves?
