1-OB22: Ray Geometry - Ultra Short Throw Projector

The Chief Ray tool generates chief rays based on the sources which are selected during the Chief Ray setup. These Chief Rays are then launched from the center of the sources and traces along the z-axis of the optical system. The user can click on the segment of the Chief Rays and apply CAD tools to measure position and analyse the affects the mechanical components have on them. In order to showcase this feature we can use one of the sample files. After opening up the ultrashort_throw_projector.asm assembly, this initial set up is given: After that it is necessary to set STOP Object in the Advanced settings (RED A), first the Maximum chief ray position delta has to be set, for this example we will use 0.0254mm this value is the maximum delta that the chief ray may be displaced from zero. Secondly, the Stop Object has to be defined, the Stop Object may be defined within the Prepare for OpticsBuilder settings within Zemax OpticStudio and if the initial ZBD settings are set as non read-onl

Capabilities of Optics Builder

Hey everyone, I’m new to this group, although I’ve been using Zemax since 1993. I am very interested in Optics Builder, but whenever I read about it in the manual, it’s difficult to see exactly how I can create objects that I can use in NSC. Can anyone recommend a source that explains in detail what OB can do and how to do it? Thanks, Paul Manhart

Reset 3D layout

Hi All, When using the 3D layout I often end up rotating the model and changing the zoom. I know that there is a button in the ribbon to reset the zoom, but there doesn’t seem to be one to reset the rotation. So far my work around is to go into the 3d Layout settings and manually reset the rotation of each axis. I just wanted to make sure I hadn’t missed a tick for resetting the rotation such as a hot key or a hidden button somewhere. Thanks, Pete

Prepare for OpticsBuilder: Static Critical Ray Trace

When using the Prepare for OpticsBuilder” tool you may choose the amount of allowable change in the location and angle of the critical rays. Position Tolerance represents the maximum allowed difference between a ray's landing position in the original file, and in the copied file. The Angle Tolerance will represent the maximum allowed angle between the target ray's vector, and the actual ray's vector. This tool helps engineers validate that conversion to non-sequential mode do not degrade the performance of the original sequential system. Sometimes due to differences in how rays are traced from Sequential to Non-Sequential Mode, the Critical Ray Tracer will fail even though the rays make it through the system. In this case, a warning comes up in the “Object Diagnostic” tab even though the file preparation is successful. Actually, the “Critical Rayset Generator” is working fine. The failure comes within the Critical Rayset Tracer in Non-Sequential Mode. As for why it fails, it comes down

Issue on OpticsBuilder converting to Creo file with multiple configuration objects

I am working on a project with multi configuration object, object type is object height, normalization is rectangular, and each object data define by YFIE, XFIE, FLWT in multiconfiguration editor, also each object had different thickness defined by THIC. When I simulate my project in ZEMAX, it works fine, all rays pass through STOP aperture. But when I converter it to Creo, the rays came out to different direction, not all pass through the STOP aperture, just terminated at the source surface. And when the Creo file be opened, it only can show one config at a time, can’t show all config together. Anybody tried this before? Or has any idea what the problem is? How to solve it? Thank you!

Prepare for OpticsBuilder: Read-Only Feature

When creating a .ZBD file with the Prepare for OpticsBuilder Builder tool in Zemax OpticStudio there is the possibility to set the .ZBD file as Read-only, the reason why this setting was put in place is to enable the OpticStudio user to make a clear distinction between the optical and the mechanical modelling. In this post I would like to showcase the differences between a read-only and a non-read-only .ZBD file from the CAD User point of view. Here we are looking at this feature with the Schmidt-Cassegrain sample file and the Creo Parametric 4 environment. As a first step we are creating two .ZBD files, one with the Read-Only Checkbox ticked and one with the Checkbox unticked (Image below) As a side note: It might be very helpful to write information, such as if the optics in the .ZBD file are intended to be changed in the CAD environment, into the .ZBD file notes on the third and final page (Save .ZBD File) of the Prepare for OpticsBuilder window. Zemax OpticsBuilder helps CAD users to to directly convert complete optical designs from Zemax OpticStudio into a CAD Environment, analyse the influence of the mechanical components onto the optical performance and export optical drawings to manufacturing. We are eager to constantly improve and develop our products, hence the new features which should give the CAD users even more insights on how the optomechanical packaging is impacting the optical performance and the range of new OpticsBuilde samples files in order to show the possibilities and the advantages of Zemax OpticsBuilder. This article takes the user through the features of the newest Zemax OpticsBuilder 22 major release. Each new feature is explained with one of the new sample files.
