Use of aerogel as material and information on materials in the catalog

Hi, i have a simple question about the materials in the catalog. In order to conclude a simulation study i need to include a layer of aerogelin my design, however i have no clue about where to find it in the catalog.

Do you know where should I look for it?

In the next days I will also need to include Si as material.  Do you know where to find it?

Another question (may be this could be very basic, but i’m new to Zemax): in the case some materials are not included in the catalogue, is there any way to include material properties such as index and scattering or absorption length with user defined values?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Nicola

I don’t think we have a model for aerogelin.

In the material column of the editor, type the name and if OpticStudio has a material, it will add the material to your surface / object. Sometimes you will see this message and the software will tell in which catalog the material is available. If you click Yes, it will add it to the “Catalogs To Use” list.

The material catalog can be customized and any materials can be added: https://support.zemax.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500005576942-How-to-add-new-materials-and-glasses-in-OpticStudio

Materials have an index of refraction defined by a dispersion law, transmission properties,... But they do not include scattering properties. The scattering properties will need to be added on top of the material. Check this article for further details: https://support.zemax.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500005575662-What-scattering-models-are-available-in-OpticStudio-

Any further questions, let us know.
