Question

OpticStudio 23.2.1 "freezes" while saving file

Forum|alt.badge.img

Hello

Using Interference Example 1- A Simple Interferometer from SAMPLES folder I created a simple setup to test a right-angle prism with pyramidal error. At the end I wanted to save the file but OS just froze and didn’t react any more - even after a longer time. I ended the program in Task Manager and opened it again without problem. The file to-be-saved before seemed to have saved well and it was possible to continue the work. I tried to save again and OS froze again. And so many times… In my last trial I wanted to check Preferences and after some time in Preferences OS froze again.

All other sequential and non-sequential files that I have behave normally.

What could be the reason. Attached is the screenshot of the file.

Thanks, Dusan

Addendum 😏

If I delete detector rectangle the problem doesn’t exist any more.

It came to my mind that the rays from the source rectangle pass detector twice i.e. we might have a data overflow. But reducing the number of analysis rays and number of pixels doesn’t solve the problem. Placing detector as a first object also doesn’t work.
Any idea on where to place detector in order to avoid double-pass of light?
Thanks, Dusan

@Dusan

It might help others to reproduce your issue if you upload an archive of your file. Also, which version of OS are you running?

Take care,

David

Hi David

Thank you for your help. The problem is that the OS (version 23.2.1) freezes also while creating archive. On the other hand archive files should not be uploaded any more?

Any suggestion?

Thanks, Dusan

@Dusan

You can upload a ZIP of the archive, as described in the Community Posting Guidelines:

Hi David

Thank you again. Can I ZIP ZMX file and the associated POB file (prism) instead as the ZAR obviously doesn’t work?

@Dusan

Can you elaborate as to why the ZAR doesn’t work? You should be able to ZIP the ZAR and upload it to the Community.

You can also upload the zipped ZMX and POB, but if you added coatings, modified a native POB, or stuff like that, we might not have the exact same file as yourself.

Take care,

David

Sorry, no idea why ZAR doesn’t work with this (problematic) file. I uploaded the ZMX and POB and there are no coatings, no modified native POB or anything special.

Thanks, Dusan

In 2024 R1.02, I can open and save your file. I attach the compressed ZAR, which includes the POB.

Is there something I should do specifically to reproduce the freeze?

Take care,

David

Hi David

Excellent, if you could do that. Please, open detector viewer and perform raytrace (clear and trace) to get coherent irradiance on the detector. One should get approx. 3 fringes. I intentionally reduced number of analysis rays and detector pixel count in order to prevent data overflow. I thought it could happen as the rays pass the detector twice. Ideally, detector should be placed left from the light source but this doesn’t work.

Whatever - when I now click on SAVE or SAVE AS the OS obviously saves the file but in that moment also freezes. What could be the reason? If I delete detector from the setup everything works fine again…

Thanks, Dusan

There are only three objects in your ZMX, I’m not sure how you generate the fringes:

Are you sure you uploaded the right file?

David

Hi David

It works with me. Reference WF is the front face of the prism (4%, Fresnel refl.) and the exit surface of the prism is reflective (index 1 in POB definition of this surface).

But: can you save the file?

Kind regards

Dusan

@Dusan

If you think this is right, then I can save the file. But I don’t know what settings you used generally (since you did not share a ZAR). I seem to have Use Polarization and Ignore Errors only in the raytrace.

In those conditions, no freeze for me, I can save the file. Perhaps something they fixed along the way?

Take care,

David

Hi David

Thank you very much. If I manage in next days I will upload the ZAR file.

One colleague mentioned a potential incompatibiliy between OS and computer. Never heard before…

Did you get the fringes on detector?

Kind regards

Dusan

No, I had the Detector Viewer as shown in my reply above.

Good luck with your issue.

Hi David

Your detector was in incoherent mode. You should switch to coherent irradiance.

Still works fine for me. I can save the file without a freeze.

Hi David

Believe it or not, I managed to create ZAR file. Please, see attached.

At the moment, I get:

But I’ve seen it happen before, it might be that if I try later to download your archive it will work.

Hi David

Thank you again for spending your time on my strange issue. I have never encountered such an issue with any SC or NSC file in the past. And as I’ve said - removing “Detector Rectangle” immediately eleiminates the problem.

Do you think it could help if I uninstall and reinstall OS?

Thanks, Dusan

@Dusan

I somehow still cannot download your ZAR attachment. @Allie do you have the same issue?

Since for me its seems to work on 2024 R1.02 I doubt that uninstalling and reinstalling OS will help, but you can always try.

Take care,

David

Hi David

Thank you for continuing support. I am attaching a zipped ZAR file of the version with the removed detector. Without the detector in the file saving and archiving works normally.

In this file one can see all the general settings I am using.

Thanks, Dusan

@Dusan

If I copy the detector from your previous file and run the archive you recently uploaded, there is also no issues for me in  2024 R1.02. I get more or less the same Detector Viewer but with Viridis colormap. Saving after a raytrace doesn’t cause a freeze.

Take care,

David

Hi David

In that case I have to give up. I hope the OS key is not damaged.

Is there an error log file that OS might generate?

Thanks again, Dusan

Hi again

New thing: OS also freezes when I click next to material cell in order to choose e.g. model glas. The pop-up menu shows and afterwards OS immediately freezes.

😔

@David.Nguyen - thanks for raising the attachment issue with me. I also see “AccessDenied” but not sure why. I see Dusan shared another version of the file so I think we’ll just leave that for now.

@Dusan - The key wouldn’t affect your program in the way you described. What you’ve described sounds like a graphics-related issue which is usually repaired with updates to your graphics drivers. There is a possibility to generate an error log in your version. Please navigate to Help...Zemax File Collector. Run that tool to gather information on past crashes and your system specifications. When OpticStudio freezes, does it also crash? The File Collector won’t log freezes, just crashes.

Please note - by default the File Collector will collect information on your PC and installed programs so if you generate the report and share it here, you will likely want to remove some of the files there.
