Hi James,

Yes, objects may be imported in either IGES, SAT, or STEP format, and once imported, an object may have optical properties such as coatings, glass, and scattering functions applied, and then be ray traced like any other optical component.

To import an object, set the object type to “CAD Part: STEP/IGES/SAT” and select the file name from the drop-down box, or place the file name in the comment column. The file must reside in the \CAD Files folder and end in the extension IGS, IGES, SAT, STP, STEP, or SAB. The extension must be included with the file name on the comment column.

This article describe how to import CAD objects into OpticStudio:

Hi fellow Zemaxers,

I was wondering if we can import CAD files in sequential mode? I cannot find the options CAD Part in the drop down menu of Surface Type.

Thank you.

You would typically make a mixed system for this task:

https://support.zemax.com/hc/en-us/articles/1500005577002-How-to-model-a-mixed-sequential-non-sequential-system

You would import your STEP in the Non-Sequential part, and have it exposed in the Sequential Mode through a Surface: Non-Sequential Component. There are some limitations, that are discussed at the end of the article linked above.

Let me know if it answers your question.

Take care,

David
