When I want to create a toroidal surface, I only see the ability to create the toroid in Y, but I want it along X. How can I do that?

Assuming you're working in a sequential system, the easiest solution is to use the Tilt/Decenter Elements tool and rotate the surface or the entire lens element about the Z axis by 90 degrees. An example system is attached.
