Hello Everyone,

I’m trying to get a spot diagram and psf of a system with tilted window. The system is a simple 1:1 imaging with two f=50mm paraxial lenses.

However, when the window is tilted in 45 degrees (I did the tilting using the “Tilt/Decenter Elements” tool in LDE), the spot diagram and psf looks weird. Below shows an elliptical beam when slightly away from focus.

I wonder what’s the reason that causes the beam deformation?

Thanks,

Sean

The tilted plate introduces aberrations, predominantly astigmatism (which varies as the square of the tilt angle).  See, for example, Modern Optical Engineering (3rd ed.) by W. Smith, Sec. 4.8:

Thank you, Jeff, for the explanation.
